Howdy!
I wanted a sanity check on this clatter, tick, whatver flavor of noise descriptor you prefer... I don't think it was present in the first couple hundred miles but I have about 500+ miles on it now and it's really standing out to me. Any educated guesses or strong opinions welcome Video below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osOjNz ... e=youtu.be
The facts...
1. It doesn't make noise until the engine is at temp. So no noise on startup and can let it idle and rev it up cold will not get the noise. Noise is present until engine cooled off completely and start cold again.
2. Noise does follow RPMS but it seems a little offset from them, hard to explain, like they are a little delayed. Doesn't really come across in the vid.
3. Broke in the cam with Lucas break in oil and now I'm running 10w30 rotella T6 feel free to roast me
4. Just changed the oil at ~500 miles and nothing notable in the oil or filter metal wise
5. Put the stethoscope everywhere and really the only place I can really hear it is on the lip of the bell housing.
6. Flex plate bolts are TIGHT
7. Noise is present with load, no load doesn't seem to matter. Once i get above 2k rpms the noise is drowned out but I think it's still there.
8. I smoke tested the exhaust system (when cold) and didn't see any leaks.

Re: New Stroker New Noise
I don't hear anything untoward in the video. If you've upgraded the camshaft and added stiffer valve springs, a little valve train noise would be normal.

Re: New Stroker New Noise
Thanks for checking it out. That's good to hear but I worry the noise isn't coming through as intensely in the video. Sometimes when I'm driving it sounds like I have an exhaust leak like when passing parked cars or retaining walls and the sound bounces back. It doesn't sound like a smooth sound. Anyone else? I put the stethoscope on it again today and could hear it pretty clearly on the bottom rear of the pan under the oil drain plug. Oddly enough after doing a spin and a couple WOT pulls for tuning logs I came home and the noise was less pronounced than when I left... frustrating
A guess of mine is maybe one of the rods is interfering with the girdle which I did use spacers for but did not measure clearance. That would be a relief...ish. I'm tempted to pull the pan to get some peace of mind.

You would be able to see marks on the connecting rods if one (or more) were hitting the girdle.

If I were you I'd do it and hope that the oil doesn't contain any forbidden glitter.soomuchpie wrote: ↑February 6th, 2026, 5:15 pmA guess of mine is maybe one of the rods is interfering with the girdle which I did use spacers for but did not measure clearance. Re: New Stroker New Noise
So how much metal is too much metal? This oil is fairly new but have to assume this stuff has come from the past 500 miles (when i put a different cam, lifters, and head. about 1000 total on the crank and pistons.
Dropped the pan I see this metal in the pan and oil has some silvery sheen to it but isn't magnetic.Oil is fairly fresh only a couple hundred miles. On first glance the rod bearings don't have any obvious play. I don't think the girdle is the issue either. I see some scoring in the cylinders (which i also saw when I had the head off) but didn't seem too concerning. Going to let this drip overnight and check out some bearings tomorrow.
