Finally a 3" Down/Y Pipe for the I 6

Post by akadeutsch »

I really want a true 3" exhaust all the way from the header back. So, Im going to order a new down pipe from Ebay. It will cost under 100 USD shipped to my door. Then I am going to take it to an exhaust shop and see how much they want to build me a True 3" version. Is anyone else interested in one of these? Im thinking that it may be cheaper if I order a few of them. I'll post again when I find out what they will cost.

I had mine done this past fall. My 2005 requires the twin mini-cats on the downpipe so there was no way I was fitting 3" mini-cats in there. What we did is modify the JBA header, which has a 2.5" collector but then they add the silly ball flange which restricts it to around 1.5. We cut off the ball flange so it was a true 2.5", then went double 2.5" pre-cats to 3" from the y back. I'm really happy with the exhaust although it wasn't cheap but 304ss isn't ever cheap. Here are a few pics.

Wow. Good work. I don't have the pre cats on my truck. I was thinking that I would leave the header alone and use very similar dual pipes to the ones already in use. I just want them to collect to a 3" pipe before the cat. I don't think that the dual 2" down pipes are the restriction in the system. So I want to leave the two pipes at 2". BTW That is a beautiful piece, Well done!

Damn that is some beautiful work. I also don't think the 2" from the header is a restriction. It does look like there is a restriction from the Y to the 3" down pipe. You could have just simed the cats out (if you could pass emissions) and ran a standard cat in the main exhaust.

While I can't use the 3" down pipe right now I would be interested in a 3" mandrel pipe for future use.

That pre-cat pipe looks great Mark. One of my projects this spring is to cut a NOS Clifford header with single 2.5" output flange up an inch or so and weld on a 3" flange, then have a custom 3" s-pipe fabbed by MBS to the 2.5" Banks cat-back. I haven't done my research if it's kosher to weld onto a ceramic-coated header or if I should even care what happens to the coating.

You will have to grind away the coating around the weld. The coating near the weld will be compromised as well.
