Newbie with questions on carbed stroker

Post by Webfoot319 »

Hi everyone -- let me start by thanking you for all the great information on this site. I've been reading about jeep strokers for a couple of years now, and have been lurking on this site for a few months. There is an impressive amount of collective knowlege here, and I've learned a lot by reading.

As a newbie, I have some questions. I've been collecting parts for some time, and am nearing the point of finding a good machine shop.

Here is my parts list and my general plan:

1993 HO block in great shape (running strong when pulled) -- plan to bore +.030 unless it won't clean up
1989 4.2 crank (short snout and 4 CWs) -- looks like it has been ground previously, and needs a slight cleanup (I have a spare if needed)
4.0 rods -- already straightened and re-sized, ARP bolts
KB 944s -- still to be bought
1993 HO Head -- purchased rebuilt for cheap but still needs to be ported (yah, I know this is bass-ackwards) (I also have a spare)
Camshaft?? -- need a recommendation for a carbed stroker if you have one (I have both 4.2 and 4.0HO cams available)
Offy manifold with Holly Truck Avenger Carb
Headers (undecided -- I can't use the PaceSetter headers I have and like, but have a stock 4.0 header)
Full MSD ignition -- seems to be doing the job now, why change?)

Here are some questions I have at this point:

Is there anything significant to be gained by polishing the con rods? Note that they have already been re-sized -- would shotpeening then screw anything up?
What DCR should I shoot for with the carb? Is it the same as a FI engine, or can I bump up a couple of points?
Do you have recommendations for a cam for this engine?
Deck the block to zero, or is it not worthe the expense and trouble with pushrod lengh?

Thanks for your help!

I could be wrong but I believe that the 4bbl Offenhauser intake manifold is only made for a 258 head. Clifford is the only one I know of that makes a carbed intake for the 4.0 head.
I plan on going to a carb setup eventually myself so I will be following this one. Good luck.
