Lifter bore grooving tool?

The thing is that most tools like that are geared toward V8 engines and I have no idea where their oil holes are.. are they before or after the lobe as the cam is rotating? Using their instructions would be easier, but it would be oiling the lobe after it passes the lifter... but if the oil can cling to the lobe then that position would work.

I like the idea of having a puddle of oil on the base circle, that is used on its way back up the ramp of the cam lobe.

Also, maybe the reason that the groove is set up that way is, because you don't want a leak aka low oil pressure, when the lifter is trying to push against the valve spring pressure.

Ok, so here is what one guy did to his V8. put the grooves where I want to put them.. so that the lobe will be oiled right before it hits the lifter.




Also, below are the instructions for the comp cam tool, which differ the location from my tool

I see no reason why I couldn't put a groove opposite the oil hole, like in the first pic, so I believe that is where I will be putting the groove.

how much is the tool, costing you?

Its the adjustable one that is harder to find. IIRC $80. Comp cam's one size tool is like $127 for our engines.

I found a few people saying that the grooves do work.. most of them are playing with race engines.. one person said that it made the cam last 3x what it use to.

The way I see it every bit helps and this will also be most useful at low RPMS where the crank isn't throwing oil onto the cam.

The only thing I am concerned about is having the oil pressure to low... but on any iteration of my last stroker I never had any problem with low oil pressure. The last time around I put a melling standard oil pump in and the oil pressure was always a lot better than I expected.

When the machinist gets to that stage I will show him exactly where I want the grooves. I don't know if he has done this before or not, but I doubt it was on a 4.0L.

The manufacturer stopped making the .904 tool. I checked a few months ago.

Thanks, I will have to ask the parts guy to look that up for me, but for that price I will either make my own or turn a regular lifter into a cam saver

(if I ever get motivated and build my engine)
