160 Degree Thermostat

Post by Coffee Commando »

Thoughts on this? I haven't heard of anyone ever running one. Is this too cool?

If you're overheating at 190* you'll overheat at 160* too.
You can get more power out of ANY engine!!!

It IS if you want your heater to blow warm air in the cold winter months. Unless you live in a country near the Equator that has a warm climate year-round, I wouldn't recommend going lower than a 180* t'stat if only so that you can have decent heater function in the winter.

It doesn't get that cold in Florida. So if I maintained this temperature via electric fans and spoof'ing the ECU into turning on the auxillary sooner with the resistor trick would this increase the HP due to a cooler combustion chamber?

Is there a complex formula for roughly guestimating detonation based on DCR with engine temperature?

No, it would just increase engine wear.

Possibly but keeping the engine running cooler than normal could increase emissions, oil contamination, and engine wear so is it worth it?

One of the guys posted a chart showing the relationship between engine temperature and octane requirement ..... January- February perhaps?

160 is way to cool...I ran a 180 for a while and at highway speeds it would be at the 1/2 hash mark between 100 and 210...you will always run rich if you use the 160..possibly ok if a hot climate for the 180. I have a new dirk radiator and the NAPA clutch fan...I run a MR Gasket hi flo 195 and it stays at 195 in all but the most extreme traffic conditions... my aux fan almost never kicks on and i don't think I ever pass the 210 hash mark
