Building a 4.2 with lots of questions.

Post by JeepSpeed18 »

Hey guys the names Jared. I’m currently in the process of beginning my first Stroker build. I am planning to build a 4.2 Stroker. I am using a 99 XJ Long block. This is going to be going in my 96 XJ. I have never built a Stroker before so I will have a lot of questions. I know my way around motors very well I am a technician at Larry Miller Dodge in Boise, ID but getting all the details figured out is where I will need help and ultimately deciding how I want to build this motor.

So far from my research this sounds like a great way to build my motor (Thanks Cheromaniac)

4.2L Wilder mini-stroker

AMC 232 3.500" stroke crank
Jeep 4.0L 6.125" rods
Silvolite UEM-2229 +0.060" bore pistons
10.1:1 CR
CompCams #68-235-4 210/218 degree camshaft
Ported HO 1.91"/1.50" cylinder head
Mopar/Victor 0.043" head gasket
0.040" quench height
Ford 24lb/hr injectors with adjustable FPR or MAP adjuster for '87-'95 engines, Ford 24lb/hr injectors for '96-'04 engines, '99-'00 Chevy LS1 26.2lb/hr injectors for '05-'06 engines
270hp @ 5300rpm, 306lbft @ 4000rpm

Any advice or input will be greatly apreciated.

Also Just for fun here is a couple pictures of my rig. Her name is Jessie

Well what do you want out of it? What stump pulling powerr? Or something similar to your 4.0, with some more everywhere?
You want it to run on 87octane? Whats your budget?

I ask, because I first asked Dino about the 4.2L strokers..cause honestly it would of cost me over 200 to get my stock 4.0 crank turn and get new bearings. I found a 232 for 158 shipped to my door with bearings lol..so I ended up with a 4.2L..building it currently:)
Let us know what you want, whats your budget..be realistic with your self though, don't say you want something you really don't!
Remember its always easier to reach your goal once you have one!

I did this. Write down what you want on 1 sheet of paper, then write down what you thinks realistic...get cost for both those ideas..
Then on a 3rd sheet write down a good comprimise of both, on the porject and the cash part..find a good medium that your happy with!

For me it was:
option1
rebuilt my RENIX era 4.0, .60 over, 0 deck, home ported head, SS valves ect. super tight quench, ect ect. with a few upgrades such as dual rtoller timing set and better lifters...but a stock cam & a turbo, around 6-8psi.

option2
or 4.7L stroker, with a HO head swap, ported head, done up right. completey done, full cam and all! Everything done 100%

Option 3
It ended up being a 4.2L after all cause the crank but basically my rebuilt 4.0 idea won..stock cam and such still. The 4.2L turbo should be on par with a 4.7L..personally I think I'll make more power from 3000rpm+ and the 4.7L will probably make more idle-3000rpm.

Find your goal, then what you can afford, then find a happy medium! Then come back and get all the help you need

Thank you for the advice guys. I got my build figured out and it turns out it won't really be a stroker just a hopped up 4.0.

I'm planning to port and polish the head and intake. I'm doing a 5 angle grind valve job and decking the head to raise my CR. It's gonna get a mild cam, new injectors, and bored throttle body. The bottom end is going to pretty much be left alone. I'm going to clean and hone it, replace all the bearings and slap in some nice Keith Black pistons. I already have a 2.5" from the cat back. I've got a magnflow high flow cat and a flowmater 40.

What I don't have yet is a header. I replaced the header in the orignal motor with the factory upgrade that has the the flex points But I would like to run a nice performance header to really let it breathe. My question now is which header should I run? What sugestions do you guys have?

Thanks Jared

My advice is do a 4.2L stroker! The cranks only 150 or so, and you get new bearings included in the price! For 150 more its worth the gains! And its plugs & play!
A comp 201 would go nicely with what you have, and can be run on stock valve train.
For a header, the APN is nice, but I prefer the Pacesetter because its got the long primaries of any header offered! I run a pacesetter!

Do you have a link to where I can purchase the crank. Also a link to the cam would be awesome too.

Thanks.

Sure bud, I ordered from Cleg. I only payed 158 shipped, but it looks like they raised their price to 190.
Call them up and let them know you need a " jeep/amx 232 crank 722 casting, (1972-1979) You get new bearings with it as well, so its deffinetly a good investment!

Alright guys I got my stroker build finally planned out. Here is my completed build sheet for what I am doing.

4.2L Milder mini-stroker

AMC 232 3.500" stroke crank
Jeep 4.0L 6.125" rods
Silvolite UEM-2229 +0.030" bore pistons
Increase piston dish volume to 20cc
8.8:1 CR (CR will be a little diferent)
CompCams 68-115-4 192/200 degree camshaft
Ported HO 1.91"/1.50" cylinder head
Mopar/Victor 0.043" head gasket
0.040" quench height
Ford 24lb/hr injectors
241hp @ 5000rpm, 294lbft @ 3000rpm

Head Gasket: Summit # DCC-4529242
Pistons: Summit # UEM-2229-030
Cam: Summit # CCA-68-115-4
Lifters: Summit # CCA-822-12
Crank: Northern Auto Parts $241 Total with core charge
Injectors: Ford 24lbs/hr $70

My next question is what spark plugs am I going to need to run? My new ignition system consists of an MSD Ignition Coil, Davis Unfied cap and rotor, Taylor 8.5 wires.

Start out with stock coppers. Then go from there..I'll be running 1 step colder on my 4.2L, 9.7:1 compression- 91octane.

I would bump your CR up to around 9-9.2:1. though..try a 18cc dish. Get a little more out of it and it will still run on 87

Thanks man. I will try the stock ones first and 18cc could work. I'm glad it will still run on good old cheap 87 pump gas becuase that is what I plan on running. I can't afford anything more. lol

Well now think this through...I've done exactly this when comtemplating my stroker.!

87oct here is $4.17. 91oct is $4.36. So about 20cents difference per gallon right?
Ok Xj's have a 20 gallon tank. So you take .20 x 20 you get a even $4.00 difference between filling up with 87 vs 91. Based on these current prices, if I had $50 bucks to spend on gas, and filled with 87oct, I'd get 11.8 gallons. Filling with 91oct I'd get 11.5gallons. My point is do you see the minute difference?

Want to know the biggest difference? 91 out here has no ethynol..eythnol robs mileage..so running 91oct you actually gain mileage! So at 20 cents more, you get better performance and better mileage! It would also be cheaper to build your stroker cause you will not be dishing your pistons.

I think you should just say screw it & run the better gas & gain in performance & not have to worry about building the motor to run in a certain set of regulations. Run the KB Silvolites 2229 at their normal dish (11.5cc). And try to get a slightly bigger cam than the comp 115..like the comp 232 possibly which has a operating range from 800-4200rpm.

You are not helping me build this motor. lol I pick a build plan and then it changes and changes and changes. I will most likely run better gas. Instead of dishing the psitons we are just going to run a thinker head gasket. How much performance difference will I see with the cam you suggested?
