The valve job is always done after the Ported.
The rusty spot, is only because some water was in after it was washed
and the compressed air could not take all of it.
You can clean it easily.
This not the first head i port nor rebuild.
Theres nothing to worry about.
I am not too concerned with the rust. that should be easy enough to remove. However, after it was washed a simple spray with WD40 or Seafoam would have prevented the rust.
Its hard to tell from the pics, but from what I can see, or think I see I am not liking. I would take it to your machinist and have him take a look at it for is opinion.
Since you have it apart, push a valve up to the seat and hold it there with finger pressure. Then shine a light at the valve and see if you can see any light through the port.
why not use a standard abrasives gasket remover kit?... It''s scrotch brite, fine grade, I don't see no problem with it, if you use a mild slow motion.
Nice. That an APN header? For some reason, I really like the Sealed Power rocker assemblies--when I took my valve cover off for the first time a few weeks ago, those rockers were still looking brand new(from above, lol).
Yep APN... going to take it in to get ceramic coated tomorrow! I just need to find a downpipe! I dont know if i want to break in the cam on this engine without one! (my 87-90 wont work).
Took the APN down to the Ceramic Coater to get coated.
Picked up the HB, FP and Crank from the Machine Shop. Looks like all they had to do was add a weight to the FP to get the balance right. Crank was Turned .010 both Rods and Mains.
Thanks for the tip guys on getting the Intake Manifold checked for straightness... apparently it was out pretty bad.. so it got straightened.
They also had some information for me on the head. They said that a couple of seats were knicked (also mentioned something about seeing light through) so it just needs a little valve work and clean the rust... but overall the head was in great shape.

That concerns me a bit too. With a 1" spacer, stock throttle body and the stock tube the elbow rubbed the hood on my XJ. K&N won't work with a spacer at all. Other intakes won't fit and have the hood close w/o massaging even w/o a spacer .
I guess ill have to address that issue when / if it comes up.
I know my RENIX with a 1" Spacer and Bored TB fit just fine... so i guess we will see when this gets put in. Worst case scenario it wont fit and ill shim the hinges up to make room. Ill be able to asses better once its in. Thanks for the heads up though... i hope its not an issue!
So i was able to make it to U-Pull-It this weekend. They only had one 91-95 Cherokee, but fortunately it had most of the parts i was looking for.
Here is what i grabbed:
Throttle Cable
TV Cable
Throttle\TV Cable bracket
Fuel Rail
Fuel Lines to Fuel Rail
Im not sure if i will need to use the 91+ fuel rail or not... but i figured while i was there i should go ahead and grab it with the lines.
No i just need to find a downpipe...

I also picked up the head from the machine shop today. They said that on almost all of the intake valves they could see light through.. so they went ahead and did a valve job. They also shaved the head to get the rust off...
