Factory Serpentine 4.2L Crank? Cut it?

Post by TheSpecialist »

I have a 1982 CJ-8 with California emissions. The belt setup seems to be factory serpentine. Any info on this? I am about to pull it and combine with a 1993 Wrangler 4.0L HO and want to know if I need to have the end of the crank machined. All the crank facts I have read say they are all the same length, but a quick measurement with a tape shows the dampener/pulley are the same distance (OC) from the block as the 4.0L setup.

Typically, it's the earlier cranks you have to have machined - where you have 10m/m taken off of the nose on the V-belt setups. Snake-belt setups for the 258ci crank should drop right into the 242ci block without any trouble.

I believe the crank number for the 4.2 crank that you dont have to remove any of the snout was the #727
2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee - 4.6L Stroker.
#727 Crank
Clevite 3415 Pistons
91-95 Camshaft
7120 Head
00 Intake
Magnaflow Muffler

when talking to my machine shop about this issue. it seemed the cheaper way out was to buy the hesco spacer for 35 than go through the extra work for machining.

i've talked to 3 different machine shops. 2 of them looked at me like i was crazy. the other one said sure no problem. we just have to send it to a guy we know. he wanted like 250.00 just to cut off the excess then re balance it. i'm not always the sharpest tool in the shed but 250 minus 35 = 215 bucks in savings by just throwing on the Hesco spacer. 35.00 seems ridiculous for a stupid spacer but its necessary. ordered mine 3 days ago.

My crank shop cut mine, no extra charge... 10mm was taken off, and you could not tell it has been done.
