WHICH WAY BUILT 4 LITRE OR 4.9 STROKER
Hey guys i am wondering whether i should do a built 4 litre like Dino's stage 2b, but with a modified edelbrock head, like the one sold by 505 and up the compression to 10.5:1 and run it on 98 RON/93 AKI, and put in their stage 1 roller cam268/276-14HRK' ' which seems to be of similar spec to the comp cam recommended by Dino.

Or should i just go all out and do a 4.9 stroker, as i would already need to get new pistons, upgraded rods and balance the rotating assembly in the first place.
How much more would this cost and what other factors would i need to consider, i know that i would need to spend more on the stroker crank, a new upgraded fuel pump,etc.
Your help is much appreciated,

I wouldn't buy anything from 505, especially their roller cam.

I've taken two of their roller Cams out of Engine's that have been brought to me by their customers.
I don't know what your budget is but my advice to you would be to do a combination similar to what I'm doing with my EMC KOH engines with less compression
3.970 bore and just using a 3.895 Standard stroke Scat crankshaft with my Forged Pistons and my bushed steel rods topped off with my ported head, special ratio Harland Sharp rockers, and ported manifold and throttlebody
This will give you the biggest bang for your buck for reasons that I could go over with you on the phone in greater detail

Ok, so what i am looking for out of the engine are the following;
Free revving up to 5500 (I've heard that there is a cam harmonic issue past this rpm)
260 + HP/290 + LBFT
DAILY DRIVER (90-120 MILES PER WEEK), THEREFORE HAS TO BE RELIABLE
PLENTY OF LOW DOWN TORQUE FOR GENERAL OFF ROADING
The engine currently has 80,000 miles on it, so a rebuild is not necessary.
How much would i need to spend to get there is Dino's stage 2b the best option?
How much compression would i be able to run on the following octanes 87,91 and 93 with the alloy head, i am not worried about which octane i need to run as all are available where i live and i don't normally drive that far.

Aaron,
I'm confused. You're asking for input on a potential 4.9 Stroker build but on the other hand you say you have a 80k engine that doesn't necessarily need to be rebuilt and may not consider buying new pistons.
That said your 6K budget is in line for you to meet your objectives

I guess what i am saying is ,am i able to reach my goal with a 4.0 or would i have to build a stroker and that would my budget stretch to a stroker.

You will not get close to those numbers with a built 4.0L. You'll need a stroker.

Without rebuilding? Have you looked at putting a supercharger on your 4.0? That is one way to get low end torque and more horsepower. 93 octane gas would help the supercharger. An intercooler would also help the supercharger. Just a thought.

I am talking about flywheel hp, surely 1 hp per cubic inch is acheivable?
260 rwhp on the other hand i can understand as being unrealistic for a 4.0.

Ok, so if i am not able to reach my goal with a 4.0, i guess i am going to have to go with a stroker.
I put the combination of;
Stock bore and stroke
Edelbrock head
9.5:1 compression,
550 CFM intake
full exhaust system
Lunati 256/262 cam
the results were 245 hp @ 5000 and 292 lbft @ 3500. So this figure is optimistic is what you are saying right?

Your horsepower and torque goals are achievable, but you're going to need some help with your build recipe.
For example your static compression ratio with the Edelbrock Head will need to be a minimum of a 10.5:1 static compression ratio in a normally aspirated application. I also wouldn't rule out a ported HO head.

In that case I suggest you buy a decent junkyard 4.0 engine (preferably from a '96-'98 TJ or XJ for your '96 XJ) and give it to Russ to work his magic on it.
