How many miles can you get out of a stroker?

Post by jason_alex_2009 »

Hey guys I have heard that the jeep strokers can only get about 20,000 miles out of them, is this correct?

2 comments about JF.

As usual to many people talking about things they have no knowledge of.

JF is not quite an authority on much above basic tech. Most are in a flock called Parrots. They spend their time spreading ill mannered information based on non factual opinion backed up by useless conjecture.

FWIW I talked to Trasborg and Cappa way before they started publishing comments on stroker longevity. Sadly they were simple magazine guys whom where spoon fed poor information. They had no idea what the valve spring pressures were till after they had gone through a couple of Comp cams. Turns out they were way to stiff (don`t recall the numbers) for a reliable stroker. Add in the lack of knowledge and understanding of what oils they should have been running (not off the shelf low ZDDP which was common in that time frame) also contributed to early failures.

In retrospect Trasborg and myself talked earlier this year on the Mopar stroker feature they (he) had started but never finished. The engine was pulled and traded to...... I want to say Sam at Off Road Design..........Had logged some 30,000 thousand hard miles and was running great. The magazine shakeup realigned some priorities and ORD was able to offer up some material for publication purposes in exchange for the stroker engine.

Many will agree that 505 is one of the worst companies out there for good solid product and customer service. Reason you never heard more was because 505 (Zac) could never support the product after the sale. I wouldn`t let 505 tune my lawn mower.

These stroker motors are based on the 258 platform, it wasn't known for failing at 20k..... More like 200-300k. As others would agree, this info is most likely the result of a poorly planned engine build/abuse along with lack of attention to various parts and especially the valvetrain. A well put together stroked 4.0 should last as long as any 4.2/258 motor.... granted they were both built and operated in the same manner. There has been a few isolated problems with worn cam bearings. I have encountered this with my current stroker and the problem was identified and corrected. Realize that when you add aftermarket parts especially camshafts, you are putting increased loads/friction into the valvetrain. This does reduce the expected lifespan for various parts, in trade for the increased power output. Do a lot of research, plan/pick your parts carefully and you'll be fine.

X2 With what 6TIME said! The "Jeep stroker" is nothing but a large bore, fuel injected amc 258. Poor planning, lack of knowledge, and trying to go to cheap are things that will kill ANY engine build.
Valve train issues are huge problems with the Jeep stroker. A stock 4.0 doesn't have the spring pressure that is going to kill a cam prematurely. Lack of bolt in after market springs and retainers and trying to figure out what will work doesn't help. The Jeep stroker is a relatively low rpm engine. You don't need high valve spring pressures to run an engine to 5000 rpm. I would venture to say that most Jeep strokers will rarely see RPM's at or above that. Throw in some SBC 1.94/1.50 valves or LS valves and you will have a plethera of valve spring choices. Or keep your valve lift below .450 and run a stock spring. My stroker had 18,000 miles, and was running great when my Jeep was totalled. No telling how long it would have lasted.

Definitely not. Many stroker engines had cam failures early in their lives either due to improper cam break in, using low ZDDP oil, valve springs that were too stiff, incompatible parts, or build errors.
With good quality parts that are compatible with one another combined with good machine shop work, careful assembly, and proper break-in, a stroker should last well over 100k miles. Mine's closing in on 80k miles.

So if i dont want to squeeze every bit of power out of it how bad of an idea would it be to run stock cam and springs?

Not a bad idea at all. That's exactly what I'm doing. I even reused my original '92 cam so the lobes were already hardened and I only needed to break in the lifters.
You could consider the modified poor man's stroker recipe in which the only non-OEM parts used in the build are the 258 crank and custom pistons. Just port the head to increase airflow, add 15% oversize injectors, and you're done.

I am planning on using a 258 crank with Icon 944 and 4.0 rods. The cam has had me stuck for a while on what to use. Every one is telling me to use a bigger cam. I just dont know about all that.
