Flywheels

Done a causal search finding a number of cast wheels in the mid to 100 dollar range. With advertised weights at 26-28 lb.

None except for the Centeforce (27.5) steel wheel is SFI rated. In fact, several make comments on "not for heavy offroad use (???) " in their description.

Anyone done a better job of looking around at available F.wheels ?

Nick said Spec's SJ40S billet steel flywheel was listed as 20# and ~$400.

Thanks Gradon. The Spec`s were not something I was familiar with at all. Look to be high quality parts.

Their product line looks quite impressive although I do not see any SFI ratings. The FW itself is quite a bit lighter which may lend itself to "other" applications. Though I did not say in the OP a 27-30 is what I would like to see.

Talked to Leee a while back and he was talking about a wheel they made with a composite wear surface that was replaceable. Have to give him or Bennie a call.

I'm searching also to make sure i get the right setup for my build regarding flex plate, starter, and any other adaptation that is needed. Came across this thread. Might be useful.

It does mention matching your start up with whatever flexplate/flywheel you're going to run. But there are a lot of things chrysler kept the same with the 4.2L's.

One caveat I found from speaking with CF tech is that the wheel the have for the 4.0 is NOT SFI rated as the Summit web site says. They (CF) source it from a US manufacture check for warpage, rebox and send it out. Grey CI not steel.

UltraRev is listing the Spec flywheel at 18#. I couldn't find the weight posted on any other site, including Spec's:

I told Nick a while back that it wasn't worth it to have Spec special make 15# aluminum flywheels with replaceable steel friction surface for >$400 when the SJ40S looks to already be 10# lighter than a stock style replacement. I'm sure this could be had for ~$300 on sale.

Lighter is better for some applications but my needs are in the 27 lb ish area. Which is OEM or close to it weight wise.

Using the 12 cwt for the harmonics and inertia for the low end grunt. Obviously the aluminum is not the way I`d want to go.

A source I cannot yet verify is suggesting that the SACHS is the OEM supplier. There are OEM wheels (53020519AB) on dealer shelves but thus far in the high 3 low 4 hundred range.

Need to tap into my Chrysler sources and get with purchasing to see if they can bring up the old number and the supplier.

Wish someone made a steel wheel.......

There is NO way I'd give that kind of $$$ for a stock flywheel?, used ones are everywhere for $30-50.
