Connecting rod pics
These are the connecting rods I removed from a 2000 4.0, compared to the 258 rod. It looks like the 258 rods would be stronger. Notice the extra gussets at the big and small end of the 258 rods.

The 4.2 rod is already nicely polished to remove stress risers. The 4.0 rod looks strong enough, remember that these engines don't produce a whole lot of HP or reach high rpms (over 5500)

i will be running stock 4.0 rods on my boosted motor... until the Internals become Externals

A properly prepped set of connecting rods should be able to hold up to a decent amount of HP. Polish, shot peen, nitride, install ARP or equivalent hardware and re-size. But when they let go they make some expensive paperweights.
