my first stroker.

Post by wolfesgreenxj »

I have a 2000 jeep cherokee an wanting some more power cheap as possible. I have a 4.2 out of a jeep yj but not quite sure of the year. I heard you can take the crank an rods out of the 4.2 an put in the 4.0 with the 4.0 pistons an make a 4.5. What will i have to do to complete this? Now remember im trying to go cheap as possible here.

The crank & rods out of the 4.2 will do fine, but I'd advise you to have the cylinders rebored/honed and use new pistons/rings to ensure proper ring seal.
It seems that my original poor man's stroker recipe fits your needs but keep in mind that going cheap means compromising a little on performance and you may still have to use 89 or 91 octane fuel to avoid pinging issues.

Thanks for the info. Could i just re-ring my old pistons? Would i have to do any machining at all?

That is going to depend on the condition of your block. If the cylinders are nice looking with no scoring then a re-ring may be enough. Pay close attention to the piston skirts and cylinder walls. If there is any sign of scoring I would hone the cylinders and get new pistons. New pistons start at 100-500 depending on your build. If you are not increasing compression then you can get away with the cheap end of piston choices. As long as it is out I would take some time to read about a DIY port and polish of the head. There is lots of power available there...and you can do it your self. Good luck. Sounds like a fun build.

That would be a bad idea. If the stroke stayed the same and the piston was riding in the same spot it would be doable. But considering that the piston will be riding in areas where it has not in the past you are asking for trouble.

Standard procedure is the have the cylinder bores measured. Most of the wear occurs at the top of the bore but there is little wear at the bottom of the bore. This creates a taper. The amount of taper and also whether the bore has worn out-of-round will determine will determine if it needs to be bored oversize. The wear limit specs should be in the factory shop manual.
As a quick check, the very top of the bore, about the last 1/4" doesn't get any wear since the rings don't go that far. And since the top of the ring travel (just below that 1/4') gets the most wear, a worn cylinder will have a 'ridge' at the very top. Best case is you won't feel a ridge, or a very slight one. If the ridge is very noticeable, it will likely need a rebore.

The Ford Racing 24lb/hr injectors that I'm using are the same as those that came in the 5.0L Mustang Cobra.

With a custom tune it is possible to run that large of an injector. It would require some pulling of fuel, but it is not that big of a deal.
