Mopar Purple Cam

Post by charley3 »

Mopar Purple Cams for Jeep 4L have a reputation for being the most reliable performance cams, and the 228 Stage 1 has a good rep for torque from 900 to 4800 rpm. Sounds perfect for a daily driver. Why aren't most people using Mopar Purple Cams? Either the 228 Stage 1, or the 229 Stage 2.

Comp Cams have a terrible reputation for failure. Why are people using Comp Cams?

Neither of the Mopar nor Comps have a reputation for being unreliable nor reliable. There have only been more reported failures of Comp Cams because they are a very very widely used cam in the strokers.

Since people have become knowledgeable about ZDDP issues in oil and proper camshaft break in cam shaft failures have dropped significantly.

The only benefit that the Mopar cams have above most other cams is that they have wider lobes.

I have not seen many complaints with Comp. I have heard of a lot with Crane but without the details it is tough to blame the cam. If you like the Mopar purple, run it.

Actually, I was thinking Crane when I said Comp.

What I really should have said is all brands of performance cams (except Mopar) have narrow lobes, which concerns me.

How much horse power and torque would a Stage 1 (part 228) give me over a stock 99 cam?

On a 4L?

On a 4.2L stroker?

On a 4.6L stroker?

I would ask Comp that question. They can probably simulate given your build. Crower gave me estimates using a few of their cams based on what I told them. They are just estimates though.

I was asking about Mopar Purple Cam P4529228AD. Why would I call Comp? Perhaps I should call Mopar.

Jegs says the newer Purple Cam part # fits 4L years 87-98. Summit says 87-97.

I wonder if it'd fit my early 99 XJ?

I have same stock exhaust manifold and distributor ignition as a 98. So might I also have same timing cover as a 98?

I doubt it for the '99. The '99 uses the cam retainer plate. Early '99 IDK, but would know when pull timing cover off.

Probably too little to make a cam swap worthwhile.

I lost all my dyno sims in a computer crash! :brickwall: but IIRC?, the OE OBDII cam fell right between the 229 and 230 (discontinued) cams, they gave better low end, the OBDII cam will pull HARD right until it hits the revlimmiter in a 4.0
As displacement increases per said cam, the RPM band drops some.
You can get more power out of ANY engine!!!

That's very useful info, if your memory is correct. Get your dyno sims recreated so we know for sure! ;)

I still have my dyno sims though but I'll be on vacation for the next 3 weeks so I'll have to post some screen shots after I return.
