Block Thickness

Post by superstingray77 »

Anyone have knowledge of casting #'s that might tend to run thicker than others? My 4.7 block was .060 and had some piston issues. I had it sonic tested and found that even .030 would be too thin in many places. Rather disappointing news. I have a spare set of IC-944's that are .060 which I would like to use to save some $$ getting it back together. However if all the blocks run this thin my machinist says he would not run more than .020 with the turbocharger on it. So I find a thicker more consistent casting or have smaller pistons made.

I have read a TON of info and the only thing I can ascertain is that the older blocks are thicker however do not have the holes on the passenger side for the AC brackets on my 99-04 WJ. If the bosses are there an just not tapped then no worries ill get them tapped out.

Rob,
while I cannot verify with 100% accuracy on all 93 blocks. Mine pinged out enough to run .080 which where it is now. It has seen the far side of 260 (electric fan issue that has been permanently fixed) a couple times and no problems.

Please note that the differences in the casting are bigger than just tapping for the ac pump, the mount for ac pump actually does not exist on say a 95 style block at all. Additionally there are a couple bosses missing from the other side that are for the alternator bracket as well. The earlier blocks as well have a different style water pump mounting.

You can likely make custom brackets for anything you need but just be prepared........

I’ve tested my friends Renix and my 1994 H.O block back in college at UNOH. I don’t remember all the specs but the renix walls were a thicker over all but not by much and both were over .200 on the thrust side with a .060 overbore.

I believe "beiwulf" here is using a 95' block, and his numbers looked like this: (9th post down) http://www.jeepstrokers.com/forum/viewt ... 2&start=30
