Custom Pistons? 4.2crank, 4.0rods, 0 deck?

Post by jeepxj3 »

Does anyone make a custom forged piston for 4.2 crank and 4.0 rods that is 0.00" deck and about 9.0:1 CR?
What dish would that have to be?
Has anyone done this?
$/set pistons?
Don't want to have to deck the block or mill the head to get good squish and also this could use stock length pushrods.
Just want to use a 0.044" head gasket and 0 deck.
Thanks.

Diamond Racing.

About 125 per hole.

Many companies will make you custom pistons. The part about being custom is that you cam spec what you want in the piston. As for the dish that is dependent on that compression ratio you want. I suggest you play around with out Compression Ratio Calc a bit.

However,
Don't want to have to deck the block or mill the head to get good squish and also this could use stock length pushrods.
I have no idea why you are so dependent on the stock pushrods. If its from a cost saving aspect you are looking in the wrong place to save money (custom pistons). It would be cheaper to order new pushrods for your spec from someone like Smith Brothers (~$70) than it would to have custom pistons made. Then there is also the case the the stock pushrods may not work for your combo even if you don't deck the block. Depending on camshaft used (base circle diameter) rocker used, valves used, and valve job you stock pushrods could be too short or too long.

For example on my engine I had to do with longer pushrods when I wend with the Harland Sharp Adjustable rockers. Sure they are adjustable, but you still want the pushrod to be as long as possible and not extend the adjuster too far. So I Had one set of pushrods to go with the Harland Sharp rockers and a certain cam. Well, when I changed cams those pushrods were just too short. So I have another set for my current combo. Could I have gotten away with shorter pushrods because I have adjustable rockers? Yes, but I believe in having parts setup as the parts manufacturer designed their parts.. so in the case of the adjustable rockers the adjuster would have been screwed out futher than necessary.

So, in short don't go for custom pistons a) just to avoid changing the pushrods and b) believing that the stock pushrods would work with your combo. And don't be attached to the stock pushrods that much.. they aren't great.

No, the stock push rods are not the point.
I want to have 0.000" deck/piston height with forged piston and good squish. I just don't want to deck the block or mill the head, then I might be able to reuse the stock push rods, but it is not necessary.
Something will have to be changed for this combo to work. Shorter rods, shorter pistons/move the pin higher. Either one of these will work and because I have to buy new forged pistons anyway, so why not just change the pistons and leave the rods alone. The Silvolite and Speed Pro pistons are cast and hyperutectic and not forged.

Diamond Racing, $125ea, Thanks.

Maybe I will just reuse the 4.0 crank and rods and get custom forged 0.060" over 4.0L pistons and increase pin height by 0.022" to get to 0.000" deck and good squish with a 0.043-0.044" head gasket.

My build has ICON 944's in it, they are the most reasonably priced forged pistons available, they are sitting right about .020" down in the hole, I'm going to have the block decked and also have no intention what so ever of replacing the OE pushrods?

Build the bottom end and head as necessary. Let that decide what pushrods you need, not the other way around. The pushrods are not a determining factor in either the head or bottom, but the other way around.

The point of the question was completely missed here. I don't care about the pushrods. I will use whatever pushrods are required. The question is about using custom forged pistons with a custom pin height to get 0 deck without having to shave/deck the block 0.022". I want to use either the 'mini stroker' 232 3.50" crank or a 4.0L 3.411" crank and get 0 deck with the pistons and not have to machine/deck the block.

The 944s won't work for me. They are for the longer stroker crank and their pin height will not work with the 3.50" or stock 3.411" crank. At $500 they are a great deal but for only a little more $, I can hopefully get custom forged pistons with the correct pin height to achieve 0 deck height and with a 0.043" head gasket get 0.043" Quench.
This is about getting 0 deck and 0.043" quench with piston pin height and without decking the block.

I will call Diamond this week.
