xj tire size.

Post by mountaineerjeff »

I know this sounds like the typical newb question found on other forums, but hear me out. I'm trying to figure out my wheel and tire setup for the rear of racejeep. I know that the front is much more limited than the rear, so most jeepers won't be able to answer my question.

I'm thinking 15x8 with a 275 width. But Idk about offset, or if I could/should go wider. This is for my 2wd street jeep, track only and the jeep is slightly lowered, but stiffer.

Any insight would help, there really isn't any local shops that can help, so I have to order them, and I don't want to buy them twice.

Thanks.

When you say "street jeep, track only and the jeep is slightly lowered, but stiffer", are you using it primarily for drag or autocross? Assuming your only really concerned with what you can run on the rear, there are only a couple limitations. I run a 31x10.50 on a factory offset wheel and it runs very near the leaf springs on the inside. However, this same setup stuffs fully in the wheel well on full compression w/out rubbing anything. A 10" wide tire equates roughly to a 255-265mm width metric tire. If your not worried about wheel travel you could go a fair bit wider w/out tearing your fender flares off. I would think a 275 should be fine though you may have to change the wheel offset to avoid contact w/ the springs on the inside. Just my 2-cents, hope it helps.

Drag. I already have my front skinnies, and last season I just ran my regular street tires on the back. This year ibwant to start with a dedicated drag wheel and tire combo. 275 was kinda my starting point. I'd like to go as wide as possible while fitting inside the factory flare. Maybe up to a 315. As far as tucking and height goes I'm looking at tires in the 26-29" range. I would love to squeze some 315s on 15x10s under there, but would be 100% content with the 275 and 15x8 combo. Honestly for my power level I should stick with the 275s now that I think about it. Too much wider will probably kill my back half.

Best bet is to use a 'Tire Fitment Tool' . You can buy one made by Percy's for $75:

Or make your own:
