Year intermix confusions

Post by woodjeep »

I already built my first stroker...a 96 block into a 92...mostly a drop in but had to change some accessory brackets and stuff-all external...now trying to gather parts for a 2001 and lots of changes...They appear to be mostly head issues...would this be a valid statement ?....Any lower end will fit in any year..by this I mean block-crank-pistons-cam-timing chain and gears and timing cover..I also understand that the accessory brackets need to match the intake manifold mount points...Im mainly concerned about crank-cam-and timing accessories. I ask about the cam and gears because I currently run the comp cam 68-232-4...I like it but it uses a cam button for alignment-, the 2001 cam has some other method of centering...I like the dual roller timing chain...can't use with the stock 2001 cam..see where I'm going. If I can build the bottom end with familiar parts, I can worry about the top end later...I WILL be using a 2001 block as my base..thanks..hope not too confusing

Yes, unless we are talking about a WJ or TJ.
Im mainly concerned about crank-cam-and timing accessories. The comp cam can be used in the 2000 block if you go with the earlier timing set. If you do I recommend using a solid pin instead of the stock pin and spring. My self an others have had cam bearing failures from the cam moving in and out of the block with the pin and spring. I'm not saying yours will do this though, but its a risk I wouldn't take. The other option is to get a custom cam that cam fit the 2000 retaining plate style. Jones Cams (http://jonescams.com/) can grind you a custom can for the retaining plate style. You will need to use the timing set for the 2000 though. The cam will run you around $300 though. Irregardless of what cam you go with I recommend a set of Topline/Hylift lifters for it, quality and a good price. PN 2011. You can get them from directly from Topline (http://www.toplineauto.com/) .

As far as the head is concerned you can also use and earlier head if you like but you will encounter two problems. The coil rail won't bolt down, but you can either fab some straps from the valve cover bolt/studs to the rail or do a Viper coil conversion. The other problem is that the stock exhaust manifold won't line up well with the earlier exhaust ports. An after market header for the 2001 will fix that issue and cover the ports correctly. If you do go with a 00+ 0331 head I would recommend a 2003+ TUPY head as it isn't prone to cracking like the earlier ones.

Wasn't there some kind of conversion for the spring and pin style to a hardened plastic knob on a bolt head?
Seem to remember seeing something like this off a cheby.

I vaguely recall someone fabing up something like that, but I can't remember who it was. Chevies do use something like that for a conversion to a roller can. I was going to go that route and use a roller can button but towards the end of planning I realized that my serpentine belt passed directly over the area I would need to put an extension on the timing cover. As there is not enough room under the cover for it. So, I dropped the idea.
