2.5l engine

Hey guys,
I'm new to this site. Coming all the way from Ireland. Need some advice on a stroker build. I have a 2.5 TJ at the moment running on 35" tyres and 4.88 gears. Would love to go with a 4.0l stroker but not an option. In Ireland I gotta pay annual motor tax which is €1080 ( about $1400 ). If I went to a 4.0l that would go up to..... Wait for it.....€1850 ($2400) so it ain't an option.
I've been looking at 505 performance 2.9l stroker engine. Anyone have any views. I'm not looking for huge power just
Like to keep up with traffic on motorway and hold power on inclines. The 2.5l is more than adequate for offroading
So it's just for street driving.
Any help/opinion would be great.
Thanks
Niall Mac

stay away from 505. do a search here and on jeep forum and you'll find out why
they actually tax the size of your motor in ireland? man that must suck wonder why they do that

Thanks for info. They tax us here cause they can....... I was wondering about avengers supercharger but don't know if
They do one for the 2.5 anymore. Would love to put a diesel in as their in plentiful supply overhere but want a straight forward swap. Are 505 that bad?????

if I were you I would definitely look at the diesel swap since yours is an export, parts should be everywhere for that. if you cant get a bigger engine I would just turbo it

They do that all over Europe but the trend now is to determine the amount of annual vehicle tax based on CO2 emissions. This makes the tax higher on bigger engined vehicles and especially older, less efficient engines. Classic cars (30 years & older) are exempt.
Niall, I think your best option is to add a turbo and you could source the turbo unit and other associated hardware from a turbodiesel Jeep model with the same 2.5L engine size.

The tax system changed in 08.Everyting post 07 is taxed on co2 emmisions. By comparison I pay €200 a year on my 1.6
Kia ceed. I gotta wait until 2028 to tax jeep as vintage (€80).I may look into turbo option but is lag not a big issue with them
thats why i was looking at supercharger.

not if you use a smaller turbo, they can spool pretty quick.

A small 50 trim maybe? I believe my buddy got a t3/t4GSR turbo (Godspeed racing) from ebay. Although an ebay brand it seems to be a better quality part than average ebay crap. Anyway he had it on a small 1.6 & later 1.8 honda motor. Believe its .48 exhaust & he has a .63ar exhaust housing as well. Sucker was quick in his 1.6 sohc motor, spool was near instant & was awsomeness or autocrossing.
With your 2.5 it'd be about the same since your not pushing 8500 rpm, but also have a slightly larger motor. Anyway that turbo has been through 2 builds & was rebuilt with garret internals after the 2nd build. Never an issue over 2 1/2 years. About 4800 miles on the rebuild. I'd say look for something similar in size & go with a rebuilt upgrade 2.5.
Plan for a small cam, slightly ported head, keep compression around the same as stock...NOT lower. It'll hold 5-8psi stock which will gain a lot. Stock compression over lower compression boast sooner spool & more low end & potentially better mileage. More compression than stock is probably a bad idea for boost lol.
Arp rod bolts. Polish rods for less stress. Larger tb..possibly stock 4.0 throttle body. Nice 2.5" exhaust. You'll end up with more mileage if driven accordingly and more power over all. I'd deffinetely go turbo over stroker on a 4cyl engine
I'll ask if my buddy still has that Turbo kicking around. I know the project was parted out after he hit a guard rail racing in some canyon. That was October though so no guarantees.

I have had great success tuning 2.5s. I did a 240 whp 2.5 on pump gas and 17 psi (!!!!)
Oh, and 505 is a joke.

Hey guys
Another option entered my head. HPA do a conversion kit to put a 1.9 vw engine in. We have an abundance of these engines in this part of the world so parts supply would be excellent. Anyone have any experience with the conversion. I think it could get expensive as the parts needed from HPA are $5k alone.
I think i may go with turbo but wonder does anyone other than 505 do a complete kit. Im not great when it comes to engine detail so sourcing parts separately could be issue.
Also any suggestions for rebuilding my motor. I have
94000 miles on the clock. What should i replace etc.
I must say this is an excellent site and appreciate all the advice

How often do they check the engine? Here it is every 2 years and there are some that have an emissions engine and then the regular engine they run. Kind of a pain but maybe an option. Storing the engine is the biggest hassle I think.
I don't think the VW 1.9 would get you anywhere with power.
