4.2 / 4.0 oil pan compatibility

I have a spare 4.2 oil pan with the skid on the bottom. A buddy like to put it on a 4.0. I am 95% sure they crossfit. Can someone tell me if this is accurate, please?

Did you see if the P/N for the gasket is the same for both models?

Quadratec has the same P/N for 6 cyl from 72-04. As long as you have adequite clearance for the sump suction tube, you should be ok

Pan bolts right on. Only problem is the pick up tubes for the oil pump are different. The difference between the sumps of the two pans is right were the 4.0 pickup sits. Ask me how I know.

Were you able to make it work anyway, or did you have to get a 4.0 pan, in the end?

I got it to work, just had to get a 4.2 pickup screen/tube. It looks cool with the skid plate, what's not cool is it holds less oil. If that doesn't bother you/him, go for it. It also gives the necessary clearance for the high volume oil pump, beating of the oil pan not required.

Oletshot have you considered a remote filter unit, possibly dual element to return your volume through the additional system volume?

Yes, I have. Farm & Fleet sells remote dual spin on filter bases pretty cheep. I was considering using them. 2 filters and oil lines should get me back to 6 quarts, plus it's easy to throw on a cooler if I wanted to. I actually even thought "dry sump" for about a second, got that out of my mind real quick though. Thanks for the suggestion.

As stated it has 1.5 pint less capacity =( add external cooler and filter for more capacity. I also used in my wagoneer chassis-I use a pre-79 PH-11(or equiv) oil filter which is the BIG one with built-in filter pressure bypass. I had to use the block-to-filter adapter from the 4.2 block. I also used the ring from the 4.2 block that is used to hold in the block pressure bypass(which is inside the oil pump in later blocks) I used the ring as a spacer to get more threads on the filter. You can also use that filter size on the 4.0 blocks with the 90 degree adapter... just pull the long tube off the adapter and swap in the fatter, shorter 4.2 filter threads.

Match oil pump to block year.

match oil pickup, dipstick with tube and pan all from the same year and application

-all pans bolt to all blocks.

advantage of 4.2 pan is that you can run exhaust up higher between pan and bellhousing.

There is oil pan that was sold for only like 2 years or so (scrambler, iirc?) that is the same layout as the 4.0L pan (rear sump) but holds more oil.

So that means its even more capacity than the 4.2 pan. =(

I might eventually take my pan down and weld on a new sump extension. maybe... I will prob just increase capacity by external cooler and bypass filter.
