This is essentially a six speed waiting to be hacked. Please tell me someone has done it. I heard some dealers can flash your computer to make the 545RFE (because the two are physically the same transmission), but I want that AND the option to up-shift into 2nd prime. Honestly, I would be lucky if the dealers around me even did the 545RFE flash. Any info would be appreciated!

Since when was the WJ 4.0L available with anything but the 42RE?

Looks like you're right I must have been reading something wrong, which begs the question, is the swap realistically possible?

It wasn't - the 45RFE and 5-45RFE were both used behind the V8-287.

Therefore, the bellhousing patterns will be different - you'll need an adapter plate, at the very least. Plus adaptation of the control electronics.

Neat idea - although I'm willing to bet that there may be a difference in the first planetary gearset that allows for the "split second gear" in the 5-45RFE...

I will add it to my list of pipe dreams. . . Adapting it is no big problem. I have been looking into the hydraulic control schematic for the (5)45rfe. I think I could make some kind of shifting override with a pwm and solenoid selector setup. The pedal position could dictate the position of the rheostat on the pwm, allowing for firmer or weaker shifts IN THEORY. I actually made something similar for my variable geometry turbo solenoid, but have not got around to testing it under real conditions. Its parameters consist simply of supply and demand.

Really? Do you have dimensioned drawings of various bellhousing patterns already? I've been trying to collect them, so I'd appreciate copies of anything you might have found already...

I apologize, by no big problem I mean it's as easy as collecting the info that you are looking for I haven't got it yet. I have done this before with a fuel injected ej22 subaru engine to an ea style 4 and 5 speed 2wd/4wd /low range transaxle. I didn't even need a plate. Just drilled 2 extra holes in the transaxle where needed and shimmed all the way around. I redrilled the smaller ea81 flywheel so the starter fit but also set one up for the ej22 clutch and flywheel... it was a turd. smaller flywheel = faster wind
Last time I ran it I popped something inside the transmission when I was bound up so now it's a paperweight. It had nothing to do with the mating. Here's an artist's connception before someone closes this tangent thread

Ah, bugger. I was hoping...

I've got to write more manufacturers anyhow - it's part of the research for Swappology (it's a misappropriation that put it up here - you can tell, because he spelled it wrong. "Swappology" is my own work, I came up with it as a working title for my next book, and even coined a definition for it. About a year and a half before this board went up!

(I'm not even annoyed by it - I posted about it in good humour some time ago...)
