Anyone running the Mopar 30ab cam ?

Post by kris »

Or mabye I should call it "Im cam-fused"...

Ive heard a bit of talk about this cam, but cant recall anyone actually running it. Can anyone give some impressions on it ?

Ive been pretty much set on the Comp 232-4 for my build, but over the weekend picked one of these up.
It advertises power between 1300-4800rpm, but what has me a bit confused is lobe separation angle of 108*, and 40* of overlap.

The LSA difference between the Comp 231-4 and the 232-4, and the 30ab is about 3* and 5* respectively, but the Comp appears to be ground 4* advanced which gives it an intake centerline of 107*.
Overlap for the two of them is at 32* for the 231-4 and 27* for the 232-4.
Comp says that the 231-4 is not for fuel injection but the 232-4 is ok with it.

For comparason, the Crane has a LSA of 112*, but an intake centerline of 107*, indicating being ground 5* advanced)

My concern is that most cams for the AMC I-6's have a LSA of 111-113*. Not knowing how these engines respond to narrower LSA's, it looks dificult to tell how a 108* LSA cam would run installed "straight up" (no advance).

Narrower LSA's are known for narrower powerbands with higher peak power, wider LSA's are known for broader powerbands, but less peak power (you dont get something for nothing).

The 30ab looks like it can be a great compromise between the Comp and Crane cams as long as the <1500rpm power doesnt suffer.

Any thoughts or experience ?

Flash, can you run the "DigiDyno" numbers on the 30ab to compare with the numbers in the "Cam FAQ" ?
Lift - 450"
Dur - 256*
IVO - 20
IVC - 56
EVO - 56
EVC -20
Overlap - 40*
LSA/ICL - 108*

Not to rain on the parade but they don't make the mopar 30ab cam anymore, so unless you have a line on one It's going to be hard to find one.

As John has already mention in the FAQ section. The comp 231 works good ..........even tho comp don't recommend it for fuel injection

I have dyno sims of both the 231, and the 232, as well as the mopar 30ab. when i get home to night i will post then up.

If i remember right the 30ab made almost the same HP/torq as the 231 but did it with less lift.

the 232 that comp recamends............... well i wasn't impressed with it as well as the 231

Mind you, the only testing of all of these cams, is with a computer program ONLY!

I realize its only a simulation, but with all things being the same in the engine except the cam, it should show the difference between them. If you have a screenshot of the graphs on the 231/232/30ab, that would be great too...

Thanks,

FWIW the stock HO (96-on) cam has a LSA of 107* and makes good of power down low.

If you are running an automatic; <1500 doesn't matter since the toque converter will take care that via torque multiplication.
If not, feel free to smack me in the face with a dead carp (although a stroker with a "top end only" cam will be hard pressed to have less power <1500 than a stock 4.0).

Thats a surprise, they're pretty much in a dead heat...

Peak HP for the 231 is [email protected]
Peak HP for the 30ab is 225@4k

Peak TQ for the 231 is [email protected]
Peak TQ for the 30ab is [email protected]

The 231-4 is slightly better under 2500rpm and the 30ab is slightly better over 3000rpm, but they are so close I doubt that anyone could feel the difference...

Yeah, I'm sure that why i didn't save the 232 cam.
I would recommend the 30ab over the 231, if A, You could still buy it. and B, because it has less lift for the same power........O and C, because it has a wider or standard lobe...............but sence they are not avalible...................231 is my pic for a good torq cam.

Hey Flash, have you ran the numbers on the crane 905 cam? I'm not buying one, just curios what it looks like on the computer dyno.

I have a 30AB cam that I am going to have profiled to see what the duration and valve timing events are at .050. The advertised numbers mean nothing to me. I was hoping to get it done this week, but it may be next week. I'll post the info if anyone is interested.

I don't have the 905 have the early version 901that i have been told is the same spec

If you could dig up the cam spec's I'll run it and post it up.

Advertised duration is more important to me then @ .050 as the program runs better with it.
I can run it either way.
