Can a carburetor 4.2 be turboed?

Post by I6CJ7 »

I'd like to increase my 4.2's power and wonder if it can be turbocharged? I see all the kits they make for the fuel injected 4.0's but i wanted to just have a simple cheap setup, something i could go dig around in a junkyard for and buy a rebuilt or new turbo and set this up, im only looking for maybe a 50hp increase, nothing outrageous, I know there are blown or supercharged carbs but i cant recall seeing any turboed ones? Anyone have any info or suggestions?

It can be done but not simple or cheaply, Google turbo carb. There was even some factory oem vehicles set up this way, Buick Riveria 3.8 for example.

It should work the same as a blow through supercharger system. The ones I have seen have used a sealed box around the carb with the supercharger feeding into the box. The turbo should work the same way. It is MUCH less work to use a suck through carb. Not too sure how well that work with a turbo.

With a blow through you get to use a innercooler. It can be made to work either way.

I have done many blow through turbos. Just need to modify a standard fuel reg and blow through the Carb with a hat. Of course you need a proper fuel pump that will make 4-5 more pounds of fuel pressure than you have boost.
