To get a stroker or rebuild?

Post by Erds »

I have a 1991 Jeep Wrangler 4.0l with 125,000 miles. I have a constant lifter noise that won't go away, also a timing chain that needs to be replaced. Am I better off to replace the lifters, cam, timing chain on this 20 year old motor or go to a 4.6 stroker from one of the professional stroker builders? All advise is welcome.

I think this all depends on your budget and what your looking for out of your Jeep.

If you are ok with Stockish power and have limited funds, then just do a rebuild. If you have some money to spend and are craving power then build the stroker.
If it feels right, then STROKE it!

If I go with the stroker motor who would you recommend be the builder, I have read bad reviews about Golen and Titan. Looks like maybe the Mopar stroker?

If you don't want to use someone local I would go with Golen, ATK, or Hesco (if you have the cash).

If I understand correctly, ATK is building the STROKER that Jeep is selling as a MOPAR 4.6L STROKER.

Please correct my statement, if this is incorrect.
I have a 4.6L STOKER in my 2000 Jeep Wrangler with 4.5" lift on 35" BFG MT and 4.56:1 gears.

Sounds like you are almost in the same boat I am in.

Have any of you guys heard of West Coast Engines?, its a subsidiary of Motor Works in Spokane, WA. They have a 4.0L and a 4.5L stroker. I have been seriously considering an engine from this company. Any reviews or anything? Its an idea. They are registered with the Better Business Bureu and from what I can find, good reviews.

That 4.5L stroker from West Coast Engines seems like a steal at $1899. Spokane is only a couple hours from here too.....
