I picked up my head and crank and rods from the machine shop. I had the head taken apart and vat cleaned so I can begin a port/polish job.
I was planning to reuse the springs, valves, retainers. However, nothing was marked when they took it apart. The machine shop said since I am getting a valve job, it won't matter where the old valve, springs go back in. Is this correct? I thought they had to go back into the same locations they came out of?

That is correct. When the valve job is done the wear pattern won't matter as you will have new seats and faces.
