I have a 2001 TJ Wrangler 4.7 stroker. What motor oil should I run?

this will be good . do some research on flat tappet cams and zddp .. you need zinc . i'm leaning toward joe gibbs race as i only drive local and not alot of miles , or amsoil. but some use diesel oils as they have zinc .

Joe Gibbs Hot Rod oil and you will be fine. You don't need race oil.

Would Valvoline VR1 race oil be good? Shop told me to use 10w30 weight. Sound right?

I used VR1 to break in my cam and I ran in my stroker (changed every 3000 miles). Cam had .501 lift and I used Mopar Performance springs. The engine had 18,000 when my Jeep got totaled. I had no problems with the VR1 up to that point. I am currently running 10w30 VR1 in my stock 4.0. I can get it locally from a mom and pop autopart store. Orielly auto parts doesn't have it on the shelf, but said they can order a case and have it the next day. I buy it for less than $5.00 a quart.

VR1 isn't Valvoline's Race oil. The VR1 comes in a silver bottle and can be had in dino or synthetic varieties. Its good oil, but there has been a discusion as to wether or not it shill has high enough ZDDP values. Valvoline does make a true race oil which is labeled "Not Street Legal" and being a race oil it will need to be change dmore frequently.

If the manager is any good, if you show interest in getting it on a regular basis, he will stock it for you. I work at O'Reillys and we have both the VR1 conventional and synthetic in stock, on the shelf.
