help, stroker not running well

Post by CoreyK »

i have a 4.7 stroker in a 1995 jeep cherokee. I am running ford 24# injectors, 2000 intake bored 60mm throttle body, stock fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. the cherokee was originally auto i converted to standard. The stroker has around 700 miles on it now. It was running well for about 400 miles then started skipping, turned out to be a loose injector connection. The hold down for the distributor was broken, so i was moving the distributor a little to put on a different hold down on and ever since the stroker now will die when i am de accelerating while driving. For example i will be driving and when i come to a red light it will die if i dont fether the gas. Please help, do you think i need to re index the distributor?

If you didn't put the distributor in the same spot it was after it moved I would reindex it. Its free and easy. Also, you might want to check your fuel pressure.

When you went to the manual transmission did you swap the PCM as well?

Ok I will try re indexing the dizzy, the fuel pressure is steady at around 40 psi I believe I will re check. When I swapped the auto to manual I did not swap the PCM.

Eindexed the dizzy, runs better more power and no more popping and backfiring, but it still shuts off when I come to a light. Could ny iac valve gone bad?

Sorry about that, there is another Corey K on another site that also has a stroker or two.
He also has been bashing (in fun I think) a local 4WD rag's editor.
Thought it might be you!
Welcome anyway! A wealth of information here.

You said you did NOT swap pcm's. I don't remember what is different, but it sounds so familiar, that has to be it. IIRC there is a sensor or switch that is causing it. Can't recall exactly what though.

Correct I did not swap pcm's. I thought you had to swap them when you went from standard to auto, not auto to standard. Its weird because it never did this before, and it won't do it if I feather the gas a little before letting the engine come down to a idle.

Did you check/replace the IAC? Do a sea foam? Air filter? Any codes (use key on-off method)?

Also, I do think there is something that the PCM might be looking for on the auto transmission, but I can't remember what it wants.

If it will sit and idle the IAC should be okay. Does it seem like it dies while coasting to a stop or more when you apply the brakes?

I would get a similar year auto pcm and see if that fixes the issue--it should have a different idle and decel map than the manual has. I ran an auto pcm in my manual temporarily and it would try to cut out at idle and would drop out when I put in in N.

It does not do it until it gets up to operating temp, and does it when I am coasting to a stop. Sometimes it won't do it at all though. I really don't want to get a new pcm yet, what else can it be?
