# 11 head bolt
On the # 11 head bolt that penetrates the water jacket. I am planning to use a pipe dope,
like rectorseal on the threads. I also have new ARP studs, so I'm going to use the ARP Ultra Torque lube.
My question is, I obviously won't put the "Ultra Lube" on the stud with the rector seal, I will however put it on the washers and stud tops.
I was thinking I should drop the torque specs for this one stud, what say the breteren?

Re: # 11 head bolt
You have to keep in mind that whatever you use to seal #11 has to be able to withstand the chemicals in the coolant, oil (possibly), and combustion pressures / temperatures. The FSM states to use Loctite 592 (works great and cheap on Amazon) on number 11 and the torque is lower on that one as well.
Coat the threads of stud bolt No.11 with Loctite 592 sealant, or equivalent.
(5) Tighten the engine cylinder head bolts in
sequence according to the following procedure (Fig.
11).
CAUTION: During the final tightening sequence,
bolt No.11 will be tightened to a lower torque than
the rest of the bolts. DO NOT overtighten bolt
No.11.
(a) Tighten all bolts in sequence (1 through 14)
to 30 N·m (22 ft. lbs.) torque.
(b) Tighten all bolts in sequence (1 through 14)
to 61 N·m (45 ft. lbs.) torque.
(c) Check all bolts to verify they are set to 61
N·m (45 ft. lbs.) torque.
(d) Tighten bolts in sequence:
² Bolts 1 through 10 to 149 N·m (110 ft. lbs.)
torque.
² Bolt 11 to 135 N·m (100 ft. lbs.) torque.
² Bolts 12 through 14 to 149 N·m (110 ft. lbs.)
torque.
(e) Check all bolts in sequence to verify the correct
torque.
(f) If not already done, clean and mark each bolt
with a dab of paint after tightening. Should you
encounter bolts which were painted in an earlier
service operation, replace them.

Re: # 11 head bolt
Not a problem. I hope that helps, I would just hate to see the time, money, and effort spent on a new build and have something as simple as that cause you issues.

Re: # 11 head bolt
1) Pipe dope works just fine for the #11 head screw - use it all the time myself.jbxx wrote:On the # 11 head bolt that penetrates the water jacket. I am planning to use a pipe dope,

2) Follow FSM specs - #1-10, #12-14 get 110 pound-feet stepwise, #11 gets 100. I usually do 25 pound-foot steps (25/50/75/100/110,) but the FSM sez to start at 50. The extra step doesn't hurt anything, I just do it because I'm cranky.
Stick to 100 pound-feet for #11, follow ARP's recommendations for the lube on the other thirteen.

Re: # 11 head bolt
Are those 88 FSM's stiil there?
I bought a FSM when I bought my 88 (new) and I don't think they gave me the right one.
It doesn't even show an I6 only the POS V6.

Re: # 11 head bolt
Test fit the studs and the water pump before you instal it for real.I got my head studs from hesco but they are ARP's and I had to trim the bottom of one (#11 IIRC)because it hit the water pump impeller.I also had to slightly clearance my vc for the top of a stud (#12 IIRC,i couldn't cut it down because of the allen socket)
I didn't test fit it 1st and had a heck of a time.

If it covers the V6-171, it's a 1984-1986FSM by AMC (I think I have one somewhere...)jbxx wrote:Are those 88 FSM's stiil there?

If I have a RENIX FSM up at RENIXPower, you're welcome to it. I don't think I have a digital copy here, tho...
Mechanically, you can use any 1987-1990 FSM. Electrically, there were some changes across 1988/1989, but you just have to check things out (mainly, some wiring colours changed - which is easy enough to note.)

Re: # 11 head bolt
I followed the link at the bottom of your post to one, but that link was broken.
Is Renix power another site? I'm looking for an 88.
Tnx.

Re: # 11 head bolt
Sorry - I wasn't sure. As I said tho, I know I don't have a digital 1988 FSM (or any other RENIX year) - I just went through that checking for someone else last week.jbxx wrote:Answered my own question.

The link worked fine for me just now - what error did you get? Also, RENIXPower is my RENIX mailserv - groups.yahoo.com/group/RENIXPower. Free and public, but moderated - I got tired of SPAM. Joining up is easy, tho.

Re: # 11 head bolt
Ah - that explains it. When I moved to the new host after GeoCities shut down on me, I lost a bunch of space - and I haven't had a chance to put it back up. Therefore, all of the internal .pdf links are NF until I can get them fixed - since I'm working on a site reorg, I haven't decided how much space I need yet. Since my wife has had a bunch of orthopaedic issues (four operations in the last fifteen months, I play post-op care and physical therapist,) I haven't had much time for site work.jbxx wrote:I went to the link in your sig line

Do you want the Mitchell manual? Ping me at 5-90 AT naxja DOT org, and I'll dig it up and send it to you. Let me know what your incoming filesize limit is, and make sure you can accept .pdf files (if I can send it all at once) or .rar (if I can't) files to your address.

Re: # 11 head bolt
Sorry I can't "ping" you over at NAXJA as I'm not a member.
I have ATT Uverse if that tells you anyrthing about file size. I'm kinda steam powered, I looked around for the incoming file information, couldn't find it.
I can "see" PDF's.
I would like any information I can get, Thanks!

Just send me an email to that address - it's public, you don't need to be a member. It's an organisation email address that is hosted by gmail - but anyone can reach it.jbxx wrote:Sorry I can't "ping" you over at NAXJA as I'm not a member.
