Valve Spring Question

Post by Winners97TJ »

I picked up the Mopar Perfomance 28AB cam and some P4529214 Valve springs from buschguy for my 4.7L build. My question is will the valve springs fit my application? They will be going into the stock 0630 casting head on my 97 Wrangler. Sorry if this has been covered before (I searched and couldn't find it anywhere), just want to make sure I'm not setting myself up for failure here. I found the P4529215 valve springs (recommended for 88-02 4.0L engines) but the only thing I can find different between them is the 14s are cylindrical and the 15s are conical. Does this matter? What makes one better than the other? Should I sell the 14s and buy 15s? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Bobby

Check the fit of the springs to your springs seats on the head.

But there is no other advantage or disadvantage to cylindrical vs. conical?

The conical is iirc a behive type (like on the '91 -up HO's) so ,at least in theory they should have a lighter(smaller) retainer = better.

P4529215 are only good for .430 lift and P4529214 are for up to .525

YEs - same install height, they fit in the seats...good to go. They just have stiffer specs and like said, they allow for more lift. You'll need different retainers but can use the old keepers.

Do you happen to know what retainers to use with these? And are there any negative effects of using these springs with a .430 lift cam? I would assume a little over-kill wouldn't hurt anything... Probably last longer than the ones rated at .430 and running them at that maximum. If you're not pushing them to full potential, I would think they would last longer? Or am I just missing something?

Sorry for the late reply - if all your cam is rated for is .430" lift, keep the stock springs and save some dough. I'd feel perfectly safe with the stockers even if I was pushing it to the limits. I ran my stock ones with my cam which has .480" lift on the exhaust cvalves and it was fine for a few years until I upgraded to the mopar ones. I didn't rev it much past 4500 though.
If you're set on the mopar springs, the retainers are mopar #4452032.
