Engine Hoist Points

Post by woodjeep »

I finally bolted on the head the other day. Plan on doing the intake/exhaust over the weekend. While inspecting all the bolt holes for all my brackets and stuff , a thought ocurred to me....Where do I attach the chain to hoist this beast into the engine compartment..thanks

I always remove/install the manifolds in the truck. You have more room and can see better. I hook the chain to the rear manifold stud and one of the a/c bracket bolts( I also have that off when hoisting)

EDIT: if using a leveler hook other end of rear chain with a longer bolt to dipstick/ ground attachment and front to front exhaust stud

On the passenger side I use the dipstick bolt and one of the Alternator or ac bracket bolts. On the driver side I use one of the power steering mount bolts and some bolt on the rear.

I put mine in with everything attached. On the driver's side I used the front head stud (Grade 8 washer and nut). On the pass side I used the dipstick hole.

Thanks for all the options....I will probably install the manifolds, that seems to be a real pita if I had to put some of those bolts in with the engine installed. I was not sure if I wanted to try to lift this engine by the head ...i:e. the exhaust manifold studs, I was afraid it would stretch the headbolt torque...i will try to find bolt holes on the block but I will not install all the brackets so I will have a few more options...will let you know how it works out..thanks

on the block is probly much better. i think when i put the 258 back in it ran for maybe a month or two before i decided to rip it back out and rob it blind for stroker parts.
