Ignition Parts

Post by laxplayermjd »

So im am about to fire up the stroker in the next couple days. i went with the standard champion plugs everyone seems to be running.

My xj is an 88 renix what id like to know is as far as the cap, rotor and spark plug wires goes are they really any different??
Ive looked and looked and all part numbers are different between the 88-90 and 91+. but are they really, is it better to just get 91+??
I know the distributors are different . i was just looking at maybe some accel wires i found on ebay for cheap, but does it depend on what year i should look for to fit the 4.0. it seems most of the performance parts wise, coils and wires etc dont have the 88-90 application.

im using the 88, due to the different ignition systems i dont think you could use a 99 without a full harness swap to a newer year

The 4.0 distributors swap renix to HO. I'm using a 94 dist in a 90 block now. same-same. the caps n rotors and wires also swap between them. although the later models have a different style rotor -late 95 and up iirc

edit:  There is one plug wire difference that matters -the coil wire. the renix coil is on the fender not the block, so it needs to be longer

after researching some more, it appears the cap and rotors are interchangeable for renix and 91+ .... autozone lists same parts for different years
the plug wires are different. it seems the only difference is a couple of the wires on the 91+ have two 45 degree boots on the spark plug ends, the renix all are straight

Can anyone verify?

Acell wires are quite a bit cheaper for the renix than the 91+

so then the the only difference in the renix to ho distributor is the location where the harness comes out?? all the indexing distributor links i see are not set up like mine, then again maybe i dont have original distributor either

The distributors will interchange IN THE BLOCK without issue, however you need to use the one for the same system you're running be it renix, obd 1,whichever.
