505 Performance

Post by dwg86 »

I was just checking out 505 performance web site. They have a 5.0 stroker kit for $2150.00. Thier prices seam reasonable. I don't think you could buy all the parts and piece the rotating assembly for less than what they are selling the kit for. I am assuming the crankshaft is a new forging? Has anyone talked to them about thier kits? I am going to shoot them an email.

I like what there kit consists of, its complete, but it was noted in another post that this kit only yields 4.9L-ish. Furthermore, Ive talked to them in the past via phone and email about some of there products and felt belittled the whole time; IE: there Sh!t dont stink...

x2. Every time I talked to them (on here, email, or phone) they were very curt with answers and didn't like giving detail or actually answering the question in full. I had talked them in the past regarding their turbo, their forged engine kits, and their roller cam. In my opinion they are new to the Jeep stroker business, poor pre sales support, while at the same time trying to charge Hesco prices. If I want to pay Hesco prices, I'd go with Hesco. I know how their support and products are.

My dealings with 505 have been nothing but positive. I talked to them (mostly Zach) 3 times before I bought anything and he was always helpful. They do believe they have the best parts, and will tell you that, but who wouldn't? Would Hesco or Speed-o-motive tell you their parts are not as good as a competetor?
I do not think so. Actually, Zach had good things to say about Hesco.

As far as prices, I priced out going with Hesco and 505 and 505 was about half to two thirds the price of Hesco. The parts are different (KB pistons vs Diamond) but I am fine with that.

I believe that the short answers (not making excuses 505) are due to the fact they are very busy. From what I understand, they do alot of their own machining inhouse , and are selling alot of stroker kits. They also do head porting and complete engine builds, along with complete jeeps.

I have always had my calls returned , usually with an apology for not returning it sooner (it has always been the same day)

I do not want to sound like a 505 Performance fanboy, but I am very happy with the parts I have recieved and the info I have gotten from them over the phone.

OK let the bashing begin.

I to have not been satisfied with their answers, I understand they are busy, And Zack has always been nice on the phone. But i could not get the answers that i needed to make a decision. I want to buy one of their cams but cant get a simple answer about the lobe width. I don't expect him to give me the entire detail of the cam but at the least give me the common specs. I am probably going to buy a cam from them, So i will let all know how it turns out.

That's what I'm wondering. Somehow I doubt it when the whole 5.0 stroker kit (it's actually 4855cc) costs a mere $2150 and includes good stuff like Ross Racing pistons and Eagle forged rods that cost ~$1000 between them, plus rod/main bearings. That leaves about $1000 for the 4.06" stroke crank and AFAIK, a new custom billet crank costs a lot more than that.

Their cams are ground by Bullet. Bullet does alot of custom cam grinding for the v-8 guys (like 700hp big blocks) I will measure the width on the lobes when I get a chance. I figured the lobe width was not an issue because other than Mopar cams, they are all narrow (afaik)

Like I said ,Zach was very helpful. Gave me porting tips for the Alabama cyl head , talked about my cam selection for about 20 minutes ,what oil pump to run and why ,wanted alot of info for my injector sizing (altitude, vehicle weight, etc).

They have been building Jeep engines for years. Zach admitted he has learned alot about what works and what is a waste of time since his first jeep engine.

I will be putting my engine together soon and probably put it in in Feb.....I'll let you know how it runs.

I called 505 perf and talked to Zach about 10 times in 2009 and each time he has been very imformative about there products. There website is not the best it seems like Zach spends more time in the shop than creating a fancy website.I eventally purchased a roller cam kit for my daily driven 4.7(about 66 miles round trip to work)plus weeked driving and fri nite test and tune at the track.installation was straight foward and i knocked off 4tents off my time compared to my comp 68 ,better fuel mileage and 13000 miles theres been no problems.some people may complain about the kit price but you get teflon coated bullet grind, comp pro magnum roller lifters, stainless steel link bars, billet true roller timing chain,ls1 springs, titanium retainers and keepers and ultradyne 80 wall chrome moly pushrods . i have all the part#s and price to these pieces and 505 not profiting a whole lot.

I would be interested in the mileage of the new cam, that's one thing I'm going to try and keep is the mileage that I'm getting now, But i would love to be able to improve. ( 25 mpg tops- 19 normally) also would love to know the cam specs.

Unless you increase the overlap of the cam SIGNIFICANTLY... MPG should not be significantly altered. Going to a roller should actually INCREASE MPG due to a decrease in friction...

The site says 4140 retainers, not Ti.. I was also told it was nitrid'd, not teflon coated.

well all i know is i recieved comp cam retainers i have the package with part# .acording to zach at 505 perf. these cams are nitride hardened to rockwell 78 and then in zachs words are teflon coated(i assume like or maybe polydyn coating?)for extra protection.

Personal Opinion. These statements have nothing to do with 505 Perf.
Ross Pistons are the hottest pistons on the market. They run about ~$700/set and are worth every penny. Leaving $300 for eagle rods. ($1000-$700= $300) This is just another fact that needs to be pointed out about eagle crap. I have personally owned two sets of eagle rods in other motors. Both failed WAY before rated HP #'s. They are machined with substandard tolerances, from substandard material and the most expensive paper weights on the market. Sorry for the interuption to this thread but it needs to be said.
