Broken 4.0L piston

Post by brewmenn »

My engine was making a knocking sound, to I dropped the pan and found this...

Just wondering how common this is. I looked at the pistons I pulled from my '98 4.0 and 5 out of 6 had the start of the same failure.

I don't remember the year of this particular engine and the mileage is unknown.

not too much to tell. had a hairline in my head gasket next to my number 1. caused it to run lean. my fire power ignition kit burned a hole in the piston.

Meh.. weak.. all of you..

That is the entire piston. Nothing left in the block but the rod.

To the OP, did you have any odd noises or abuse your 98 engine in anyway?

I had a piston in my 2001 4.0L that looked exactly like that...was one of the middle cylinders, bought it that way at a deep discount....not sure how common, but we must have had something in common because it looks exactly the same as yours

Revival!!!
I have a 1999 WJ with the same thing. Just talked to another fella who has an 2000 WJ with a shattered piston. So between cracked heads and cracked pistons, the later 4.0 is not all its cracked up to be.
