001 Main bearings
OK i started fooling with my crank after i ordered the pistons, Now i have found another problem. I need some 001 main bearings. I checked bearing clearance with standard bearings and found I'm going to have between 3 - 3.5 clearance with std bearings. I really don't want to turn the shaft as its in excellent shape. Does anyone know where i can get some 001s? I found the old AMC 327 has a slightly thicker shell but i don't think its enough. And they are pricey. By the way its a 87 model block so the 258 bearings will work. If anyone has ran into this problem or someone knows something, I would really appreciate the info.

Re: 001 Main bearings
Clevite has 001 and 002 for rods. Only 10's for mains
Rod Bearing(6) TM-77 CB-960P STD,1,2,10,20,30,40
Main Bearing Set TM-77 MS-704P STD,10,20,30,40
Federal Mogul (sealed power) is the same thing, except no 002 for the rods.
Time to cut the main caps and line hone.

Re: 001 Main bearings
Years ago we would put "Tapered shim stock" under one of the shells, usually the cap, and it would take up the clearance, but I haven't seen any of that stuff in years now!
The last time I got some was from NAPA, it was in their "Balkamp" line. IIRC?

Re: 001 Main bearings
I actually have some, But I'm kinda scared of doing this. I would worry about heat not transferring to the cap more than anything else. I also have a 12 counter weight crank that has a bad seal area and thought about tightening the seal up with some of the shim stock. But to I'm scared of this to, Don't want my new motor leaking out the rear main in a few miles. I have actually found a line on some 001,002,003, Bearings. I just haven't heard back from them yet. But i will let y'all know when i find something out.IH 392 wrote:Years ago we would put "Tapered shim stock" under one of the shells, usually the cap, and it would take up the clearance, but I haven't seen any of that stuff in years now!
