Header mod

Post by Exos »

Is it worth it to modify the collector/head pipe for a Banks torque tube, or any other header for that matter, and make it 2.5 or 3" (for a 4.7 stroker) ? If I leave it 2.25", is there a head pipe out there without the kinks and restrictions of the OE front pipe? Banks does not seem to make a head pipe for the XJ...

You would need to get a custom 2.5" downpipe made and yes, you can enlarge the collector to 2.5". You could even go 3" and make the downpipe 3" as well. That's what I did to mine.

Thanks, I have already read your page on this. But the question is : Is it worth it?...

And I guess I would need to go to an exhaust shop for this. Do they need to cut the actual collector and weld a new one?

And another thing: If I have a custom pipe made, without an O2 sensor hole, and the cat removed too, what do I do with the sensors? Will I automatically have a check engine light?

with the sensors removed (assuming its an obd2 system) you will have a check engine light. if its not an obd2, i dont think you have the downstream 02. there is however things that people have done (install a resistor or somethin, im not too familiar at this point) to make the computer think the cat is there and functioning, as that is the primary function of the downstream 02. the upstream 02 needs to be there for some fuel injection systems, to check if its running rich or lean.

You wil have a check engine light on. But keep the cat. Get a high flow one and there won't be any discernible horse power loss.

Firtly yes, you'd have to get the 2.25" collector cut off and a 2.5" collector welded on.
Secondly, you can have an O2 sensor bung welded into your downpipe and retain the sensor, so no check engine light.
Thirdly, you could install a high-flow cat which will cause minimal HP loss.
Finally is it worth it? I think it is just for the sound even if there's not much of a HP gain on the dyno.

Have you done any looking around on the web to see what kind of gains the aftermarket is claiming for a full exhaust on a stock jeep? and if the header is for a stock jeep could it be optimized for a modified jeep?

i started my journey down the hop up path with an exhaust it was a 2.5 in cat back from dyno max got it from summit for 95.00 shipped. i thought that it was cool for a while definitely ran better as the stock stuff was toast. i then came across a borla header and made a 2.5 inch collector and used mandrel bent pipe to make my S pipe. i went ahead and cut up a bunch of mandrel bent pipe and made a 3 inch cat back with a flow master muffler is it excessive for stock a little as i don't run a cat. but if i ever get the motor together its going to be perfect. and it sounds mean as hell.
