Victor makes a thinner MLS (Multi Layer Steel) head gasket for the 4.0. See here

It is Victor Part Number 54249S. I and another on the board here have mic'd it and it is .038 to .040. Obviously with a zero deck block, that would give you great quench numbers, but will also kick your compression up some....and of course don't forget to add the difference between stock and this gasket so you know how much you have to modify your valvetrain.

I don't think taking that much of the stem off is a good idea. According to the FSM the most you can take off is .010".. past that and you will run the risk of getting into non-hardened valve stem.

Just adding a little extra to this..................with a 1.6 rocker arm, it would have required .032" cut off of the valve tip for .020"deck or head shave................Which would affect the geometry of the rocker arm, even more then the shim under the rocker arm pivot. Rocker arm would be on a down hill slope, before it started to open the valve.
