Thanks guys.... ill get that cleaned up and make sure its straight.

So I got the EBay head today and for the most part it looks pretty good but I'm concerned about the head surface. It was supposed to be resurfaced.... but it doesn't look like it to me.. what do you guys think? Should I have it checked out at a machine shop and get some money back or do you think it just needs to be cleaned up by me? If I need to clean it what's the best way?

Also what do you guys think of the port and polish job? Looks good to my noobish eyes... but I'd like your opinions.

is that rust on the gasket surface? and if so is it just surface or is it pretty deep? you could try some steel wool (super fine) to clean it up. it could have rusted due to not being protected after resufacing. if this is something that doesnt clean up easy i would request some money back and have it resurfaced then you know that its done. if it does clean up you sould be good to go

It has been surfaced, and that rust need to come off, steel wool or a scotch bright pad should get it clean enough, and the over spray on the gasket surface needs to come off too.
That doesn't look like a very good port job to me, the port floors look like they've been lowered? and the blending at the valve guide isn't complete, the valves will have to come out to see how the bowls look and see what the short side radius looks like?

I would take the valves out and see if it has a 3 angle valve job, assuming they said that is what it has. Hopefully the valve job was done after the p&P so you shouldn't see and nicks or scratches from the porting work.

Ill need to remove the springs anyway because im going to be changing them but using the valves. So when i find my valve spring compressor ill remove the springs and take some pictures.

So what are my options right now? Is this head not looking usable? I dont mind cleaning it up to get rid of the rust. Id rather not mess with the port/polish job .. that was really the point of buying one finished. So if its "ok" then im "ok" but if its going to do more harm then good right now then... well CRAP! but i need to know because i really dont know what im looking for. I really REALLY dont want to ship this beast back!

The auction also said the head is clean.. but its actually pretty dirty inside the combustion chambers.

looks like left over gasket material. . . Standard Abrasives makes a gasket remover kit.

Can you get a better/closer image of what I think is the #3 intake seat and the #5 exhaust seat?

If it has been resurfaced, then why would there be any gasket materal there??

Is the SA kit ok to use on the HG surface?

looks like rust, the fresh surface got wet, I wouldn't use the SA kit on the gasket surface, it's likely way to aggressive!? the short side radius looks ok?, the guides can be blended better, the seats have been faced and lapped in if they're ground properly they shouldn't need to be lapped, the seats don't look like a quality 3 angle grind, basic at best.

Its surface rust. The head has been surfaced and hasn't been run since. I am not sure what the SA kit is but from the sound of it it is a abrasive kit you put on a grinder. If that is the case I would not use it on any gasket surface. They tend to leave peaks and valleys and generally leave an unlevel surface. I would recommend using a scrapper and a brass brush to clean the rust off as good as possible. Seafoam or WD40 would help too.

Its still a bit hard to make out the valve job and if there has been any tool contact with the seats. If you have a 3 angle valve job you will see 3 distinct machined edges which shouldn't have scratches or gouges in them.

I sent the ebayer all the information i have been armed with and here is his reply:

The valve job is always done after the Ported.
The rusty spot, is only because some water was in after it was washed
and the compressed air could not take all of it.
You can clean it easily.

This not the first head i port nor rebuild.
Theres nothing to worry about.

I see one valve guide beeing almost grinded thru...I would personally not use that head if it's the case.
