I don't think you could put a washer on top of the lifter, it would change the pushrod length. I just used my hydraulic lifters. Everything turned out good.

Won't the lifter compress and change the measurements? Maybe I could compress it all the way with the adjustable rocker, although Comp says to NOT preload the lifter....

I can't compress if there is no resistance. The spring inside the lifter will keep it 'right' under no load.

Ok then. I'll degree it like it is, with head installed and hydraulic lifters. We'll see the results. I agree that without the rockers installed, there will be no load on the lifter.

I just verified the play in my timing chain, and I am right on the limit : 1/2 inch of play. This is most likely due to the main journals beeing line bored. What do you think? Is this going to be OK? I hope I don't have to buy another chain...

1/2 inch of play is too much. If that is the case you need to find a shorter chain. Some manufacturers sell shorter chains/gear sets, for engines that have been line bored.

For degreeing the cam, remove the rocker and put the dial indicator on the push rod.

If your timing chain new? As said before I know some companies sell slightly shorter chains for items like this.

My chain is brand new, it's part of a JP performance set. I don't know if they make a shorter chain for that set, I did not find anything on their website about it. I know they sell shorter chains, but not for the AMC 6 I think. So I have a big problem....

Ideally, I could find a shorter chain that will fit the JP performance double roller set. I'll do some research. More money, more delay...

I just sent them an email asking. They don't list one though. There has to be a solution to this as people have had Jeep blocks line bored/honed before. JP magazine's article on the 505 stroker mentions using a Chevy BB timing chain set, but going off Rollmaster's data I don't see how. http://romacusa.com/Sprocket_Data.pdf

There must be a way to remove links from these chains. I have access to lots of tools and equipment. But I'd prefer finding a chain or a set that will fit. I have a headache now. I will search tomorrow.

One important question : When checking timing chain slack, do you measure deflexion only in one direction, or do you measure both directions and add up?

Because my 1/2" is a total of the slack in both directions.

I have a feeling that I should measure only in one direction, and if it's the case, than my deflection would be 1/4"...

Yes 1/4 inch. Sounds like what you really have, common enough error. Rule of thumb is allowable deflection should not exceed 2-3% of the sprocket's center line spacing.

Ok : I recheck the right way. I have 5/32", maximum 3/16" of deflection. What a relief !!

BTW, JP replied already. If anybody has 1/2 of deflection, you need part number : JP5984 LB10

I tried to contact JP but they couldn't even tell me that they made such an item. Good to know though.
