Remanufactured Crankshaft Machining? .10/.10 ? .20/.20 ?
Maybe a question to be added to the crankshaft FAQ, but what do these numbers mean regarding remanufactured crankshafts? What would be better? How do I know what I got if I just ordered one? How will I know what bearings to buy? I hope that I didn't screw something up by just buying the good deal that I found.
What about New Old Stock (NOS)? I have seen NOS mentioned and for sell on ebay, although the dude is in Turkey, $220 for the crank and $180 shipped, too bad he can't just drive down the road and come see me, he's right there.

The numbers reefer to the amount of material removed from the bearing journals to get a fresh smooth surface for the bearings. If the crank is a reman then it may have scores and grooves in the bearing journals so they turn them down to remove them. .010 and .020 bearings are easy to come by, just tell them that you need .010 over or .020 over when you order them. .030 are harder to come by and I would avoid them because you are at the end of the line if you need to turn the crank more.
New old stock is a brand new crank that has been sitting on a shelf somewere for 30 years. It is a new unit.

Also, watch craigslist and use craigshelper.com to find a crank. I found a few used ones on there and a new one a while ago.

I don't claim to be an expert, but the stamp number he claims is on his 12wt crank is 3214722. Is this an alternate number for 12wt's? Also, the stamp number for his 6wt crank is 3214723 which is the stamping number for a 12wt.PolloLoco wrote: I have seen NOS mentioned and for sell on ebay, although the dude is in Turkey, $220 for the crank and $180 shipped, too bad he can't just drive down the road and come see me, he's right there.

Are you really looking for a 232 crank with only a 3.5 inch throw?

I think there is some discrepancies in the # of counter weights.
For example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CRANKSHA ... 240%3A1318
Says it is the 4 counter weight version, 3235477. From the picture he has I count 4 weights, unless I am counting something wrong. Now, the crankshaft FAQ's last post says that it is an 8 counter weight then in the "code" section it says it is a 10 counter weight crank.
In this auction he lists it as a 12 counter weight 3214722. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JEEP-CRA ... 240%3A1318. Again I count 12 weights, although it is for the 232 engine not the 258.
Lastly, this auction http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JEEP-CRA ... 240%3A1318, lists the 3214723 which should be a 12 weight, but he says 6 and out site says 12 and his picture appears to be incorrect as I count 8.

my 10/10 12 weight came from rock auto, drop shipped from the reman company
rock auto has casting numbers listed with the product
$250 shipped with king bearings. don't forget only rod bearings are usable, mains have to be 4.0 bearings
thread on it here:

I'll post my response there, here TOO.
The rod bearings are all the same.
The '87-'90 4.0L/242's use the same main bearings as the '64+ AMC 199's 232's and 258/4.2L's.

I would assume that .01 and .02 inches have been removed, but why is the number always listed twice? x/xRAPTORFAN85 wrote:The numbers reefer to the amount of material removed from the bearing journals to get a fresh smooth surface for the bearings. I also think that I misplaced the decimal point.

two numbers are given one for the rod journals and one for the mains .PolloLoco wrote: I would assume that .01 and .02 inches have been removed, but why is the number always listed twice? x/x

How common is it for the numbers to differ?yuppiexj wrote:two numbers are given one for the rod journals and one for the mains .

Fairly common. The mains usualy see more abuse then the rods so they are typicaly turned down more. The crank that I run is a .010 rods, .020mains for example.PolloLoco wrote:

I got a really crappy one from Oreilleys, the mains are .040. Only one company makes that size of bearings, and theyre in israel.
Now I can be like all those other awesome people with more than one Jeep in their sig, but now I have to say one of them is sold:(

I got all my standard rebuild stuff from Falcon and they couldnt find anything for my application (97 block). It was still around the same price, so I wasnt terribly upset.
