jffffl if you get a chance to take some good pics of that head and the markings and numbers under the valve cover. please see the 0331 head thread, or if you can send the pics to me and I'll add them to that thread. Try to get some data on which heads crack and which don't so we can figure out which is which.jffffl wrote:Just picked up two of the Mopar part# P-4259242 head gaskets today (Dec.8) at noon. I haven't measured them to be sure, but they
should be the 0.043' thickness. That is one for the future stroker, and one for the 2001 XJ (with the not yet cracked,0331 head).
After I ordered them from the dealership (Dec. 3) there were still five in the Mopar parts system. They were about $6.00 less than
the price Summit shows on their website.

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
Daughter drives the 2001 to school, its tough enough to get it to the shop at work to change oil, let alone
check under the valve cover! At sixteen she thinks it is her Cherokee, let see, who bought it, put new tires,
new catalytic converter, changes oil, even filled it with gas today. I have been dilegent watching for any
moisture in the oil and at the oil fill cap. It runs like a top, but it has 97.5K on it, so I'm thinking it could
be just a matter of time before it cracks. Agian that is why I bought two head gaskets.
Oh yea, she called this morning to tell me she had a flat when she got to shcool, so I ran down and luckily
it wasn't completely flat. Took it to the tire shop where they fixed the flat and rotated the tires, gotta love
Les Schwabe for that.

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
That's an interesting combination gasket--almost looks like it's for the 0331 with those exhaust ports. Definitely a better kit than the fel-pro.

You are correct, that is the gasket for the 0331 heads.

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
Would this kit be appropriate on a '99 XJ block? Looks like the onyl thing that *might* be weird is the exhaust ports on the head, right?RAPTORFAN85 wrote:A little update, here is a link to the kit

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
Check the rear main seal. Jeep changed the rear main seal around 1999 0r 2000. The newer style rear main seal is a conventional 2 piece round seal, where the older seal has 2 legs, for lack of a better word, extending off the side of the seal...that goes into the rear main cap.

The manifold gasket pictures is for the 00+ 0331 head. Won't work for the earlier heads.

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
I called Federal Mogul last week asking about dishing of pistons. They said as long as you maintain 0.250" thickness you should not have any problems.
