ARP rod bolt question

Post by dwg86 »

How tight should the arp rod bolts be in the rod, and in the cap. I am measuring about a .004 interference fit in the rod and about .001 interference fit in the cap. That seams really tight. Will the rod split trying to get the bolt in? How would I get the cap off with a .001 interference fit?

You do know that you can't just simply just swap rod bolts... right??

Yes, my rods haven't been resized yet. They are going to the machine shop this week. I was just doing some measuring. My biggest concern is getting the rod caps off after they are resized and I am plastigauging the bearings. With a .001 interfence fit, it's going to be difficult to get the caps off.

They resize the caps and rods when they install the bolts.

I had to hammer mine with a rubber dead blow hammer to seperate mine after being resized. and i don't mean HAMMER on it like driving a nail, but it was tighter then just pulling it off by hand

.004 might be a tad on the tight side but I wouldn't worry about it and the .001 press fit on the cap is necessary to locate the cap after it is resized and while it is being assembled. If you are going to have the rods MPI'd (magnafluxed) the rod bolts need to be out to do it right. If the machine shop does not leave the caps loose on the rods when they are resized you can use some aluminum or flat pieces of steel and a vice to hold the cap and wiggle the rod to get them apart. When they are in the engine just unscrew the nut until the threads of the bolt are below the nut and give it a tap with a brass drift.
