I have been researching my smog issues on the Jeep, and ran across this great news. It's the Magnaflow / Carsound web site with new info for "installers" and dealers in California. Now, starting 1-1-09, they can't just put whatever you want on your vehicle. They have an "approved" list based on the vehicle in question. They can be fined and/or lose their licence for non-compliance. At a glance, it looks like the biggest Carsound cat I can put on the Heep is 2 1/4 inch. My system is 2 1/2 inch from the header collector to the tailpipe.

So, it looks like I'm screwed again here in California. I could find a person who would weld in whatever I want, but not a muffler shop. This makes building a ported and cammed stroker kinda pointless. If you can't get it out of the cylinder, you can't get more in. So Dino's stock cammed stroker is looking even better.
Comments welcome, maybe I read something wrong!

Go to NAXJA, and ask the west coast chapter--I'm sure someone could weld a 2 1/2" cat for you cheap.

A stroker, but using a stock cam is what he means.

Re: For us lucky ones in California, Smog nazis again...
The Heep passed smog a few days ago. What did I do? I had a muffler shop put a big Magnaflow OBD2 cat on it. Not the correct one for the Jeep. It passed with lots of room to spare. I had it done just in time before the new regs went into effect (now). So, for now, this nightmare is behind me. Until next time. I continue to watch as you all do you own strokers, watching for the pitfalls. Mostly, the cam issues.
Happy New Year!

Ahhh the liberal utopia.
I have a feeling we will all have your problem with smog regs before long.
