Pics.. are my valves bad?

Post by RockyMtn96XJ »

This is a Pic of before lapping, then after about 1 minute of lap with purple tube permatex valve grinding compound, and a final lapping on a non-pitted valve.
Half my valves have "spots" as I like to call them. Makes me feel better than saying "pits".

Maybe these are toast to the point I've not come across this amount of toastness....

Verdict?

Wow .... I didn't realize how much my old flip phone camera could really bring out the texture in my photos. I call that either bad, or a shart ton of "buildup deposit crap" that needs to come off.

If you're doing a budget build, get a machine shop to reface them. There will still be visible pits, but you may get sufficient sealing. Of course the right answer is to replace them. Either way, I suggest having a machine shop reface the seats in the head for proper seal.

I ended up buying all new valves. And I noticed a miniscule amount of concave wear on the lifters so I'm going with a Comp 68-232-4 and lifters. Summit has a package with that cam, lifters, springs to handle extra lift, timing set, and all hardware for install. Theres also smaller packages that just come with cam and lifters, oil seals, etc. I already have some of the items that come in the most elaborate package from a head gasket replacement last year so im trying to figure out what I need to buy and not buy. Its a budget build without trying to be TOO cheap hahaha.
