Volkswagen used a crap load of those too, they were junk then and I do't see any advantage to them now?, if you want a slush box put a slush box in your Jeep.
You can get more power out of ANY engine!!!

The idea (playing with the thought) was 0-1mph performance, where manual sucks. And keeping the manual benifits for the rest.
Here in Europe - never met such VW gearbox combo..

I wouldn't say they used the extensively?, but I've seen MANY in late 60's early 70's type 1, 3 and 4's, they called them "Auto Stick's".
You can get more power out of ANY engine!!!
