Pipe dream?

Post by lens_xj »

I have been reading and learning a lot from all you guys so that is why I am here now. I need to learn so much more before I start working on the big stuff. it is true what they say "the more you know the more you know you don't know" so far it has been the easy stuff (and cheaper) . before I do a lot more work and adding experience I want to ask you this.
what I have is a 4.0 and I want to get it stroked out to ??. the reason I but a question in there is because I do not know how far out I need to go to get what want and still be as reliable as it is now. the motor I want starts to poll hard from 800 RPM and peeks out at 2500 (about 350 foot LBs . from there it runs a flat torque curve to around 5000 and drops off. if you all think that I am on the right track I will learn what I have to learn and why each peace will help the other to get the motor I want, if not,, then I need to rethink what I am doing and why.
is this a pipe dream ?

You can easily get 300lbft with a low budget stroker but 350lbft would indeed be a pipe dream unless you have deep pockets.
What's your budget?
1992 XJ 4.6 I6 - 5MT - Stroker build-up, Stroker "recipes" Sold
1995 Mustang GT - 4AT - Modded Sold
2006 Mustang GT - 5MT - Modded Midlife Crisis Car

Then you could do something like this:

4.6L low-buck stroker

Jeep 4.2L 3.895" stroke crank
Jeep 4.0L 6.125" rods
Custom forged +0.030" bore pistons, compression height 1.380", dish volume 18cc
9.6:1 CR
CompCams 68-231-4 206/214 degree camshaft
Russ Pottenger ported HO 2.00"/1.55" 62cc cylinder head
Mopar/Victor 0.043" head gasket
0.043" quench height
Ford 24lb/hr injectors
268hp @ 4900rpm, 326lbft @ 3500rpm

I highly recommend that you pick Russ Pottenger's brains about executing the build.

Thanks. I have a couple of the things you talked about and I have been working with Russ on the roller rockers and we have talked about heads. I think I will end up getting a head with the cast number 0331 and let Russ work his art. I know if I through enough money at it I can get all sorts of power out of this motor but I would really like the torque to peek at 2500 then run flat up to 5000. that is the only thing I doubt but would love.
by the way I love your build

He he, you don't ask for much. ;)
My engine's torque curve peaks at 3400rpm and runs virtually flat from 1500-4500rpm.

it peeks at 3400? I don't understand. if it peeks at 3400 how can it run flat from 1500 to 4500?
