Help! New intake and running rich?

Post by purple_jeep »

Hi All,

I installed a 99+ Intake, 68mm throttle body and cone filter with 3.5" pipe on my 4.6L Stroker
http://www.jeepstrokers.com/forum/viewt ... f=8&t=4596

Started it up and drove it around, seems to perform a little better but strangely when I look at my long term fuel trims they are between 0 and -10 which seems wrong since I increased the air flow... I don't know what they were immediately prior to the install as I had not checked them in a while.

I also get a clicking noise as it cools down which is new starts off fairly frequently and gets further and further apart as it cools. its fairly loud, if i park in the garage I can hear it in the house. Also the inside of the manifold appears to be wet with fuel but I did a pressure check and it holds pressure (~44lbs) when off over 10 mins.

more details in my project thread.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Chris

I'll tackle part of this since no one else has helped yet.

1. If you didn't check long term fuel trim before hand you have no baseline for comparison.
2. You have only added more air @ WOT, and as a whole you spend VERY little time there, most of the time you are at part throttle, limiting the amount of air. So long term fuel trim should not change anyway.
3. Try loosening all exhaust attachment points while hot and retighten, heat expansion may be causing a little stress, that has to unload when cooling.

I once had a 1990 Nissan Hardbody with the 12v 2.4, great motor. But it would have a rattle at certain VERY small rpm window and only when hot. Turned out it was a manifold heat shield bolt that was loose when hot and tight when cold. Took me forever to nail it down because it would only rattle at 100rpm window.

As far as the intake manifold, given that the injectors are holding pressure and they are very close to the cylinders, and if you can see it you are talking about just under the TB, it is just oil haze from the valve cover breather hose that goes to the clean air side of the filter housing and then into the intake. If it does not use oil, dont worry about it, it is just mist residue.

Well there were some replies but they got lost in the forum reset.

The pinging noise is coming from the engine somewhere... I finally got my 2.5" downpipe fabricated and installed and they even cut off the 2.25" outlet on the thorley header and installed a 3 bolt 2.5" flange so they did a great job but this did not affect the noise at all.

The oily/smells like gas residue that i can see is in the base of the manifold under the TB yes but the 3" intake pipe is completely dry also the old manifold I removed was damp at the ends of the runners where it connects to the block...

Today I checked for exhaust restriction using an exhaust pressure gauge. It read about 1-2psi at idle and 2500rpm so that seems to be fine.

Checked compression on all cylinders all tested out at 150psi.

Checked vacuum at idle using a gauge steady at 15psi. If i snap the throttle it comes down close to 0 then up to low 20's then settles back to 15psi. Did not hold it at an rpm above idle to see if it was stable at 15psi regardless of rpm but I can do that tomorrow.

I need to get flying ryan to adjust my tune to see what magic he can work with the new exhaust and intake but I might be limited by my cam I think :(.

Cheers

You can add a set of 1.7:1 Harland Sharp roller rockers to help 'increase the cam specs' without having to replace the cam. It's an easy bolt on.
