Hi guys new here, I'm sure questions very similar to mine come up all the time and I'm sorry if this is redundant, I know newb questions can be frustrating.
If you're still willing to help this is what I'm looking to do. I currently have a 90 yj with a 258 (mc2100 carb hei ignition no computers) and I'm looking to drop a stroker in it in the next few years (yes sorry slow build, my current 258 is running great) I would like to pick another 258 up on Craigslist or something cheap to build it on and put it in when it's ready.
My questions are
1. What will be the "best" stroker recepie for me? If I can I would still like to use normal gas and I want to keep it carburated
2. Which carb would suit this build best? I'm looking for torque
3. Is their a kit that will have most of the parts I need? I have a local shop here for machine work.
4. Finally what distributor will be best for the build?
I appreciate any advice, I'm under this same name over on wranglerforum regularly in the yj section.

Re: Newbie YJ stroker
Here's what I suggest:
Modified poor man's 4.6L stroker build (use 258 crank from a donor 258 engine in a 4.0L block)
'00+ 4.0L intake manifold with flange modified to accept a 390cfm Holley carb (go to http://www.jegs.com/p/Holley/Holley-390 ... 9/10002/-1 )
'91-'99 exhaust manifold or aftermarket header with custom 2.5" downpipe
Reuse existing HEI distributor

Re: Newbie YJ stroker
Thanks for the advice, would I use the 4.0 head as well? If so will an xj 4.0 mount right up or do I need to get one from another yj?Cheromaniac wrote:Here's what I suggest:

You can use a complete 4.0 engine from a '91-'99 Cherokee or Wrangler as the basis for your stroker and yes, you'd be using a 4.0 head as this is vastly superior to the 4.2 head.

Re: Newbie YJ stroker
So I will be using electric fuel pump right? There's no way to use a mechanical on the 4.0 If I'm not mistaken. Will I just be leaving all the sensors and fuel injectors in place, or is there a way to clean that up? Is their a kit I can get with pistons, cam and such?Cheromaniac wrote:You can use a complete 4.0 engine from a '91-'99 Cherokee or Wrangler as the basis for your stroker and yes, you'd be using a 4.0 head as this is vastly superior to the 4.2 head.

There's no way to use a mechanical on the 4.0 If I'm not mistaken. No. The 4.0L camshaft doesn't have a lobe to drive a mechanical fuel pump.
Will I just be leaving all the sensors and fuel injectors in place, or is there a way to clean that up? You won't need them with a carbed set-up, and you'd need to have the injector bosses in the intake manifold sealed off.
Is their a kit I can get with pistons, cam and such? Go to Russ Pottenger for pistons. You can reuse the stock 4.0L cam if it's in good condition together with new lifters.
