Do it myself this time ! 4.2 mini stroker
Since my builder is no help and doesnt seem competent Il do it my self. After reading about the 232crankshaft situation and being already bored 60 over i have somr questions.
Can I use the 682324 cam ?
Silvolite pistons bring a zero deck ?
Stock valves and pushrods ?
40 quench plus or minus on 43 head gasket ?
87 or 91 octane ?
Do I have to dish pistons ?
Heres my first few questions, whenever I have others do shit its messed up. One reason why I never hired an employee !!!

Well Russ or Dino would be the exception who I would trust.

Seems to me You have had a whole lot of headache with your builder and other issues around this engine.amceaglesx4 wrote:Well Russ or Dino would be the exception who I would trust.
When I try to do too much crap and have a bunch of issues - sometimes I realize that it is cheaper for me to just pay somebody else to fix the problem. Then I can go do what ever it is I want/need to do.
My advice is to pay Russ to build your engine, because that is what he does best. You should spend the extra time you will have doing what you do best to earn some extra money so you can pay Russ to build a decent engine. My Dad was a painter too. He sometimes did extra side jobs to pay for other stuff he wanted. Just saying what makes the most sense from what I see. I will be paying Russ to build my stroker, BTW.

Hopefully he will give me a price. My builder has been a headache. I was going to do it myself but figured Id have an expert do it since Ive never had before. That turned out well. Apparently the cam I put in after being told my old lifters supposedly destroyed it wasnt the issue. That was fun wasted time and money. My wife is going to try and get the Eagle into the jeep dealer. Hopefully they can pinpoint the problem then ill go from there.

I strongly recommend you hire Russ to build the engine for you and make you a happy man. It'll be money very well spent and you won't be starting multiple threads that we've beaten to death about things that have gone wrong.amceaglesx4 wrote:Since my builder is no help and doesn't seem competent I'll do it my self. Can I use the 682324 cam ? Yes
Silvolite pistons bring a zero deck ? Yes. In fact the deck clearance will be ~-0.003" even without milling the block
Stock valves and pushrods ? Yes, though you'll need a pushrod length checker to confirm
40 quench plus or minus on 43 head gasket ? Yes
87 or 91 octane ? Yes
Do I have to dish pistons ? No

Re: Do it myself this time ! 4.2 mini stroker
Either way things are looking up. Just need a crank now. All I need is the short block. My 7120 just had a three angle valve job. Then again who knows if this builder knew what he was doing. Its so damn aggravating and my wife is pissed me spending all this time in the garage. I dont blame her because it pisses me off too.

Since your on my ignore I don't bother reading all your tales of woe.
From what I gather you still haven't figured out what is wrong with the first engine.
So now your going to build another engine and piss more time and money away.
BLAMING EVERYONE BUT YOURSELF FOR THE FIRST ENGINE DISASTER.
Tell you what, if you approached me to build you anything for whatever price I would flatly turn the job down. My reputation and self esteem would not allow an idiot like you to represent my work.
Have a nice day.

Umm...yea anyways
Thanks grouchy smurf for you insight. Btw the eagle is at a shop to pinpoint a problem then ill go from there. Also I didnt build the first motor dick.
Dude, please dont leave anymore responses.

Re: Do it myself this time ! 4.2 mini stroker
You're giving this WAY too much critical attention. I have a good feeling about the geometry of this one but it would suffer in anything bigger than the sx/4. The 232 used different pieces for the oil system than the 258 an 4.0L. You might want to reuse some of them. Also, the new 4.2 profile is going to be right in the middle for EFI and Carter carb specs. Do yourself a favor and eliminate any chokepoint in airflow before bolting up the head. I'm using casting 7120 and did it all by hand. Never needed a pushrod length checker either. You might need one though.

Did you do this stroker ? I have an sx4 and 270 hp with 3.55 gears would move very nicely lol

No I'm doing a 4.7 Super. Eagle wagon, auto-manual swap and I still have 2.72 gears. I'm not sure how this will go until I get everything back together. It's gonna be a while. :/

Re: Do it myself this time ! 4.2 mini stroker
Does it need to be bored to be a 4.2 wilder mini stroker or is it a 4.2 without overbore?

Re: Do it myself this time ! 4.2 mini stroker
You're not really interested in the physical geometry of these engines are you?
Dated
3.75² x 3.50 = 232 = 3.8L
Stock
3.75² x 3.895 = 258 = 4.2L
The 4.0L has a stock bore of 3.875 and you're attempting to use a 232 crank with an overall movement of 3.5" to manufacture a specific displacement near or around 4.2L.
Stock
3.875² x 3.50 = 247.65 = 4.06L
3.885² x 3.50 = 248.93 = 4.08L
3.895² x 3.50 = 250.22 = 4.10L
3.905² x 3.50 = 251.50 = 4.12L
3.915² x 3.50 = 252.79 = 4.14L
3.935² x 3.50 = 255.38 = 4.18L
At +0.060 bore the overall displacement becomes 255.38ci or 4.186L which is a fairly good sum to 4.2L. I'm actually using that bore with a 258 crank to achieve what we round up to a 4.7L displacement.

Re: Do it myself this time ! 4.2 mini stroker
I have one of the very few "square" strokers with a 3.895" bore/stroke and 4563cc.
Funnily enough, the 4.6 V8 in my Mustang is also nearly square with a 3.552" bore and a 3.543" stroke.

If you are going to be building an engine yourself you need to do a bunch more reading and research before you jump in with your current knowledge.
