Events summed up on my knock sound

Here's the details on one thread...

Initial break in with 87 octane and 10w30
Fifty or so miles changed oil
Went from 2bbl 287 cfm to 4bbl 500 cfm
Filled up with some 89 octane
Loud tapping out of nowhere
Idling tap , cruising tap, accel and decel fine
Replaced camshaft with new lifters and head gasket
Oil change rotella 15w40 with Lucas zddp additive
Lubed new cam with comp lube
Soaked new lifters as well
Sound present but less
2 people verified not a lower end issue
Stethascope tells rockers louder farther back you go
Back three plugs really carboned up
2bbl back on now 4bbl had pool of gas in intake

For me breaking it down sometimes helps

Don't even know what to say. Its obviously not a tappet, rocker or pushrod issue since initially there was no noise. Drove it pretty hard awhile to 4gs and it got a lot quietier but still present. Its more present on idle if anything mostly. Idk maybe its not engine related. Could be a clutch issue or exhaust causing the sound to travel. Maybe the comp cam has a little noise to it. Anyways...

The stock headers on '87-'99 models are known to crack where the secondary pipes meet the collector so you could explore there.
It might be helpful if you could post a video of the noise on Youtube so we can hear what's going on.

Maybe it is your cam walking/banging back and forth, front to rear. Maybe you need a cam bolt instead of the pin and spring.
This same issue has been reported several time here.

Not the header thing but thanks. I know xjs not strokers. Can you lead me to that topic. Can't be the bolt idea because it would of done it the whole time thanks though. It runs really strong though ! I'm sure the wife can figure out a video

Dammit Chris this is really getting annoying.
are you telling me you cannot find an exhaust leak on your own ?

You could just watch how the rocker arm tip presents itself the valve stem. If the contact point is pretty much centered then wonderful.

Take the obviously mistuned 4bl carb off and replace it with the 2bl till you learn how to rebuild and adjust the 4b. Better yet buy a new or have someone else rebuild your old. Please let someone else tune it for you. You will surely ether fuck that up or generate another 20 threads on dinosaur carb tuning and still not get it right.

Take the damn thing out and drive the shit outta it. If it's going to fail then let the damn thing fail. All this what if and maybe that BS is not going make your engine any better. You simply don't know WTF your doing. Fact is you don't really even know if you have a problem. As has been said, sometimes the cam itself makes noise.

In one last ditch effort to help you I'll word things in a way you might understand.
You cannot clean an oil based paint brush with water. So quit being Mr. Engine guy and run the damn thing or do what Dino said and take it to somebody who knows WTF they are doing. As you simply do not.

2bbl is back on and yes I know how to find an exhaust leak. Not really complicated to feel around for hot air by the exhaust.

BTW.... you actually can clean an oil base resin brush out with soap and water only if its a water based alkyd like Sherwin Williams pro classic or ace alkatex so fuck you !

No, my personal life is just fine.

In fact its so good that I even try to help slow witted folks like yourself. Even though I could be doing something more productive, say walking the dog or perhaps sleeping.
