I own a 88 YJ that had a 4.2 that just got tired so I snatched it apart and using the cyl head and block from a 95 2wd XJ with the 4.0ho and used a generous comp cam kit and 258 crank and rods
Engines assembled fully minus the dizzy then it happened. I hit a snag a big one too. My Clifford R-4500 intake nor the stock carbed intake line up and the yj exhaust also doesn't line up the XJ exh manifold appears like it'll interfere with the front DS I do still have the stock FI intake that came on the 95xj.
It appears I have to find a buyer for my new useless Clifford intake so anyone have any suggestions or do I just cut my losses and rebuild the 258 head and sell my built HO head

Why do folks keep building engines with 4.2/258 rods ? Unless they take a bunch off the deck(which is never mentioned) or use a piston that has the lower pin height it just doesn't work as well.
Read in so many threads on forums where folks start a project with little idea on how to complete it.
Swap engines then decide what transmission to use. Change ignition systems then ask how to wire it all up.
All for forging ahead but at least have an idea how you going to work towards a finished product.
Guy spent thousands of dollars on a driveline swap. Purchased an aftermarket wiring harness for non computer controlled application and now doesn't understand why it doesn't work with his computer controlled electrical system.

Re: Head swappers wanted
Thanks for the useless criticism that pertains in no shape form or fashion to my situation as this has been in planning for a few years the engine IS FULLY ASSEMBLED. I need an intake and exhaust combination for a 4 barrel Holley on a 7120 cylinder head. Installed in a 1988 YJ wrangler manual shift

You could get a '99+ 4.0 horseshoe shaped intake manifold and either modify the throttle body flange or have an adapter spacer made to accept your Holley carb. You'll also need to plug the injector bosses. You could even use your '95 XJ intake manifold but the later manifold has curved runners and provides a more even distribution of the air/fuel mixture to each cylinder.slo87 wrote:Thanks for the useless criticism that pertains in no shape form or fashion to my situation as this has been in planning for a few years the engine IS FULLY ASSEMBLED. You can also use your '95 XJ exhaust manifold and ask your local muffler shop to make a custom mandrel-bent 2.5" downpipe for you.
